Wow, a very interesting night of no shame. first of all, due to
a scheduling mix-up in Kamerick, we had to relocate at the last
minute to the Russell Hall Auditorium. Somehow, everybody, got
word, and we still had about 130 people in attendance. There
were also several fire alarms that went off at random points,
unfortunately, but all turned out well.

Parts were funny, but it can be hard to do an NVG play without NVG
:2. Simply Josh--by Josh Fitkin
This guy was awesome... he is looking like he will be a valuable
contributor to No Shame... people are still saying "are you Lang
Hall"
:3. #7--by Katie Frederick-Schector
Helluva poem, cool delivery. What bothered me was when people said
"Why did she do that? It wasn't funny!" People sometimes don't
understand that No Shame doesn't always have to be funny
:4. Never Trust a Monkey--by Jesse Sheedy and Josh Johnson
This was ripped off from Space Ghost Coast to Coast. That's not
cool.
:5. MTV Without the M--Adam Lauritsen
Didn't see this one, as I was trying to figure out what the hell

The other girl was Erin Cook, for the record... the dating part
was based on an actual date I had where the girl wanted me to
drive her to watch her ex play college football. I say fuck that.

First double entente of the semester. First 50 double ententes of

Once again Josh comes up strong. This was excellent in a Norm
McDonald/Kevin Neilan style... beats the hell out of Colin Quinn

This was funnier to me knowing that every girl from Fort Dodge
named Brooke was hot, hence why the hot girl in question should
have been named Brooke... or so I think.

What an interesting night. There was quiet the bevy (is that
even a word?) of performers. Was the political jabs necessary?
I guess the def. of no shame would mean... that you have no
shame. Obviously. Do some people feel that they can't be funny
without some sort reference to drugs, sex, masturbation and
beer? I don't mean to sound prude, but hey, is it all
necessary? I think the guy on guitar did rather well. There
are also some other key performers that I am glad to see
return. Josh Goodrich is always good for a laugh. Some
suggestions, what about an MC between acts to introduce the next
ones so that the performers can get right into it? Also to let
the audience know who is performing. Can we get a PA system?
Also, what about a compulation of all these original plays at
the end of the semester? If not hard copy, perhaps a full
online one?
if interested in any of this, please email me
Simply, Josh

Sometimes I feel compelled to reply. This is one of those times.
Political jabs aren't necessary, but I think No Shame is an
excellent forum for satire of any kind, and politics is an
important and salient issue at all times. People have criticized
others for having plays that are too much "drugs, sex,
matsterbation and beer" as Josh put it, so from time to time we
choose to raise an important political issue in a humerous
context.
As for the content of my plays (as I know I was the target of
Josh's statement), all I can say is: people laugh. If I can make
people laugh, then I'm doing the right thing. I know I can be
funny without using a single penis reference, or saying anything
about drugs, and I have done so. This is just what comes out.
As for Josh's other concerns, an MC would be nice, or at least an
announcement of author and play title. A PA system wouldn't really
be necessary, even though we are now operating in a larger venue
than we had before. I like the coziness of a space where people
have to project. As far as getting a complete compilation of all
originaly plays... good friggin luck. I'd love it, but many people
do No Shame and then forget about it. It's hard enough to get some
people to submit their scripts online. I'd love to see Josh and
everyone else who reads this send your scripts to NoShTh@aol.com.
It helps if you send them as an attachment and in html format.
If anyone has any questions or concerns, talk to me.

Hey everybody. It's about time I checked this website out.
Pretty Cool. Anyway, thank you all for another exceptional show.
It was nice to see some dramatic acts for a change. However, the
comedy was as good as always. I will be more than likely taking
a hiatus from No Shame until "Picasso at the Lapin Agile" is
over but who knows maybe I can still make the shows.

One of my big questions is do you think we could have powerpoint
ability in Russell Hall? I was thinking along the lines of using
it for my Weekend News and possibly other performers could use
it as well. Anyway get back to me whenever you can. Later and
thanks again for a good show!

Subj: BoardRoom: Interesting, howard....
From: joshfitkin@hotmail.com (Simply Josh)
Time: Sun, 23-Sep-2001 09:17:25 GMT IP: 63.24.13.237

I understand where you are coming from, but I am not sure if I
agree. I mean, i understand that it is important to laugh, but
when do you stop? please don't misunderstand me as being a
prick but I just know that there were some people that were
offended... but then again, i am personally getting sick of the
whole thing. Some might call that selfish, but i find myself
watching more cartoons and Comedy central Much more then i did
before. YES, we need laughter and all that stuff. Well, God
bless America, the land of free speech and all that jazz.
As for no shame, i think this awesome. i have always wanted to
try and do standup, and I guess that this is a good venue for
me. Everyone is so cool how they support everyone else that
gets up on stage. I also liked howard's commentary on the last
NST. Although it may seem egotistical, it is good to know what
other people thought of your performance. Was there anything i
should cut completly, anything that made you almost wet
yourself. How can I be a better performer.
Spread the word, This Revolution is neither televised nor
broadcast... it is simply called No Shame Theater!
Simply,
Josh

well, what the hell. heres my take of the skit that raised all the
fuss.
i heard several different complaints about the offensiveness
of jesse and howard's piece. i saw the entire piece as a
satire on george bush, not as a satire on the tragedy itself.
and when has making fun of dubya ever been too far? the
piece itself had much racist humor, which i cant say didnt
make me squirm a little, but if you really watched you would
see that what jesse and howard were doing were making fun
of those people who hold those views, not condoning it.
while i dont really think GWB holds those opinions, l find it
ironic that the most racist son of a bitch ever to hold secretary
of defense is leading the operation.
bottom line, i was very affected by the events of last week.
however, lets remember democracy, and that first
amendment right that says that howard and jesse have every
right to make their political statement, just like people have
every right to hate it. but lets not hide behind our worries of
offending people, we can go to basic for that.

Subj: BoardRoom: damn right it's interesting
From: howzi@hotmail.com (Howard)
Time: Mon, 24-Sep-2001 22:32:53 GMT IP: 24.149.21.150

Here we go:

I would like to remind the readers of this board that I did not
write the play that satirized Dubya. In fact, I told Jesse not to
do the play... not because of its content, but because I didn't
find it funny. Luke had many fine points regarding that play...
first off, Jesse was not making light of the tragedy in any way.
Second, any "racist humor" was indeed meant to mock those who are
racist. Anyone who doesn't believe that need only look as far as
our play from last year, "Bigotry Examined", available on this
very website.
My last word on content: I believe in pushing the envelope. If no
one becomes uncomfortable by my writings, then maybe I'm not doing
my job. For the record, I would like to say that I hold no
animosity whatsoever towards any group, color, nationality,
handicap, sexual orientation, whatever. I only hold animosity
towards those who display stupidity or closed-mindedness, and I
try to show that in my plays. I believe it is our duty as artists
to say whatever we believe... if someone believes that what Jesse,
I, or any other artist writes is offensive, then by all means say
so. More importantly however, write something that is more
uplifting yourself. Try to set a good example. No Shame is an
creative outlet that you can use any way you wish. Above all, be
creative... don't recycle old Kids in the Hall skits or anything.
Just go with the flow, and you'll come up with good pieces.
Hope I've been of assistance.

Just thought I would drop a line to say that it is good to see
responces to some of the messages posted here. I guess I should
clarify myself. I think that it is safe to say, that one of the
great advantages of No Shame Theater is that you can get away
with anything (except for breaking things) I wasn't critisising
anyone's works and i appoligize if it came across that way.
Regardless of current affairs, Dubya has some some
pretty "classy" things. As for commenting on the political
affairs on hand, I guess I was just speaking out loud for those
that are to spineless to speak for themselves. I applauded,
laughed and shook my head many times during the last NST. I
once again want to appoligize to the authors of all originial
works performed. I will be honest, I didn't realize that all
works had to be originial for NST till after signing up and the
three and only three rules were anounced at the begining. Yes,
it was a recycled sketch from kids in the hall. I can tell you
though, all works from me will be origional from here on out.
I have to miss the next NST unfortuneatly, so that will give me
some time to work up something originial and half way decent.
Thanks for you imput!

personally, i think its about damn time we got some heated debate
going on in this chat room. thats why we have this here, to get
feedback. i wish we got more of it. another point of
clarification...the members of the audience have every right to
be offended or to not like a piece. thats the risk we take every
time we write/perform. thats also the risk an audience member
takes when they decide to come. if someone dislikes something,
they have every right to voice that opinion.
the only responsibility that No Shame has is simply to provide
the forum for that voice to be heard. to say "i didnt like it" is
drastically different than saying "that shouldnt have been done."
regardless of recent events, free speech lives on, and we will
continue to exercise that right to the fullest.

Wow! I hadn't visited the board room in a while, and I was
rather suprised to read what I did. I didn't realize I had
offended anyone with my play. I guess I figured I would've
offended some republicans, but geez, I didn't know I ruffled
so many feathers. I know my play wasn't that funnny, but that
wasn't exactly the main thrust of the play. I was horribly
sickend by all of the stupid things W did after the tragedy, and
I just wanted an open forum to display those feelings. I would
like to thank all of those that spoke on my behalf in here, and
thought I don't have anything political planned for the next
show, I'd just like to say I'm not going to stop short of doing
anything I'd like, as that is the point of no Shame. I don't want
to say I don't respect the opinions of those offended, I just
mean to say that they wont deter me from following any
artistic vision I may have.

okay, i think its time we put aside the controversy, because
there were a lot of really great things about last weeks show
that deserve mention. i cant really do a full review, since i
was up in the light booth and couldnt hear as much as i would
have liked.

first of all, peter feltman blew me away. ive been friends with
pete for a long time, but id never heard him sing. "beyond" was
really a beautiful, heartfelt song. i hope he comes back to do
more.

it was also refreshing to hear jesse do something on the serious
side. "For Holly" was a really nice commentary on how we can
mistake love, and how it can turn into something that we never
expected.

josh goodrich always cracks me up. "weekend news" was extremely
funny and worked really well in this forum.

josh fitkin's stand up was really well done. this guy has got
fantastic physical humor, and its good to see a new face taking
such an interest. keep it comin, man

i thought gretchen and jess did a very nice job with my
piece, "embellishments". this is part of a ten-minute play that
im working on right now, and they gave me a lot of ideas on
where i could take it. thanks guys, if you read this.

as for everybody thinking they were going to see "fairy of
oz"...consider yourselves tricked, suckas!

if anybody could write a more detailed review of the show, that
would be great. feedback=good.

Everyone tells me that this was really funny, but didn't have the
best ending... oh well.
:2. Darth Vader's Dream Comes True as he Hosts the New Kids'
:Television Show--by Neil Van Gorder
I wish NVG had some time to write new material... this was an old
piece of his he dug up, and it just doesn't have the wit of some
of his newer stuff. It was still nice to see him back at No Shame
(and with a girl no less!!!)
:3. For Holly--by Jesse Wozniak
I'll be honest... I was scared when I found out he was writing
this. I was very releived, however, to find out he went through
all of the thought processes that I had wanted him to. Good job,
Jesse.
:4. Simply Josh--by Josh Fitkin
Gotta love the red shoes, gotta love the self-depriciating humor.
I liked the "put on a 10 year old child" line a lot...
:5. The Fairy of Oz (take 2)--by Dave Oline and Luke Pingel
Friggin awesome.
:6. Beyond--by Pete Feltman
Damn... i didn't know Pete had it in him. Very Dave Matthewsish.
Soopoib.
:7. God Truly Hates Us--by Jesse Wozniak
I've already talked about this...
:8. Improv--by Clifton Bogly
What I loved about this guy was his excitement. This guy was
really happy to be here, and you've gotta love that.
:9. Deep Thoughts--by John Cochrane
Eh... I see it as an experimental piece.
:10. Weekend News--by Josh Goodrich
Once again big Josh comes through. For the next No Shame, neither
me nor the Josh's will be able to make it... that will be a hell
of a gap.
:11. How Junk Mail Saved My Life--by Josh Fitkin
Good acting... it reminded me of Chris Farley doing Matt Foley.
:12. A Call To Action--by Howard Zimmerle
One of my weaker pieces... sorry guys.
:13. Embellishments, Part 1--by Luke Pingel
Honestly... I didn't like this as much as I like most Luke pieces.
It was good, but I think it could have been better. I don't know
how... hell, look at the shit I write. Oh well...

Good show all around! Submit your scripts!

were canning it because seemingly all of our regulars have a
conflict. i will be gone, howard, goodrich, josh fitkin, and neil
too. plus there are three plays opening in the area this week,
which will take from our audience. so if we had a show, it would
probably be a shitty one.
if youre looking for a good definition of no shame theatre, check
out the charlottesville site. todd ristau, who was the godfather

":okay, i think its time we put aside the controversy"

This, from the man that posted less than 24 hours ago how excited
he was that there was some heated debate on the board. Just
found that a little amusing.
Anyway, I just wanted to comment on Embellishments, as it
pertains to "Sure Thing" by David Ives. Well, they're quite
similar. I am not calling you a hack, but just making sure that
you knew something like it was published out there.

And can I ask, in response to some of the other discussion, what
is the obsession with the First Amendment? I'm new here, and
have only seen one show, but who is trying to oppress you? I
thought it was a "dare to fail" idea; a workshop to develop new
material.
Overall thought I think it's a great idea. Sorry to hear it
won't happen this week. Oh well, what the hell.

Chris
