Dear anyone who went to the last no shame,
Hi! My name is Erica and I am writing a paper about No Shame
Theater and I need some help. I would like a few other people's
opinions/reactions to the last performance and no shame theater
overall. Thanks for any help you can give me.

:2. Ode to Goodwill by Bridgett Eggers (performed by Bridgett E.)
Cute and quick... I like that
:3. Live from No Shame Theatre by Jesse Wozniak (peformed by
This was done really well for a white boy rapper. The problem with
Mumia is that it's hard to find actual facts about his case that
aren't on freemumia.com or something.
:4. A Couple Songs by Q (perf. by Q)
Interesting style. The Jackie Chan one was really funny.
:5. Philosophical Cancer by Howard Zimmerlee (perf. by Howard Z.
This is probably the skit I've been proudest of. It was a little
heavy handed near the end, but I was proud because it wasn't all
dick and fart jokes.
:6. Something by Courtney Clausien (perf. by Courtney C.)
Grrrl power.
:7. Bulbadie with the Television On by Jeff Lindhart (perf. by
I like this guy. He and the Josh's have made three hilarious
newcomers this year. Someone said that he saw the "we don't even
own a television" thing somewhere else but that Jeff's was
different and better.
:8. Luke's Assignment by Elysia Hansel (performed by Elysia H.)
I like Funny Elysia better than Poet Elysia.
:9. The Pitch by Grant Tracey and Ron Sandvich (perf. by Grant T.
Good concept... I think my favorite part was Ron's singing/guitar
playing and the ongoing helicopter/ceiling fan thing.
:10. Beyond Heaven by Pete Feltman (perf. by Pete F.)
This built to a great crescendo. Someone asked me after the show
if Pete had a CD, so if you do, now is your chance to plug the
hell out of it.
:11. 2 Poems by Katie Frederich-Schector (perf. by Katie F.S.)
Katie is probably the best poet we have at NST, but I think
Jesse's creeping up on her heels.
:12. Uncomfortable Silence by Nick Castor (perf. by Nick C. and
I would have liked to have seen more happen than just Luke yelling
at him. Maybe a fight or something... that way the audience didn't
have to be debriefed right away.
:13. Why God Why? or Oww, This Hurts by Jesse Wozniak (perf. by
I loved this. This may have been the gutsiest skit so far in the
short history of NST. It redeemed what I thought was a mostly
boring NST.
:14. The Most Sophisticated Play in the Whole Damn World by Luke
I like skits that are concepts and do something different than
normal. This was a good example of that.
:15. Escape Attempts by Neil Van Gorder (perf. by Neil Van Gorder)
I think this was pretty much the only serious piece from Neil that
I remember, and I think it was the best NVG piece I've seen. I

No Shame Theatre provides one of the best forums for fresh
creative ideas I have ever seen. I especially enjoyed the show
on Friday, November 30, 2001, and I look forward to future
shows. One great truth about No Shame Theatre is that the
audience is extremely supportive and welcomes risk. Risk breeds
creativity, and I hope I never hear Bob Barker say, "Have your
risk spayed or neutered!"(Although I am not sure why he would be
prone to saying such a thing.) Jeff Lenhart, Dec 1, 2001

God has smiled on us by granting us No Shame Theatre. And it's
not one of those forced grins--he's showing us his glorious
pearly whites. Kind of makes up for for that whole exile-from-
Paradise thing...
:1. Poems by Elysia Hansel (perrfomed by Elysia H.)
I feel horrible, because for the life of me I can't remember what
either of her poems were about. Sorry, Elysia.
:2. Ode to Goodwill by Bridgett Eggers (performed by Bridgett E.)
This one was a fun one. Find me a college student who doesn't
owe gratitude to Goodwill, and I'll call you a liar.
:3. Live from No Shame Theatre by Jesse Wozniak (peformed by
:Jesse W.)
It's amazing what one can learn from a forum like NST. It felt
like Humanities class for a second. The poem takes it's
usual "rap-esque" style which lends well to the subject matter he
chooses.
:4. A Couple Songs by Q (perf. by Q)
To be brutally honest, Q is a much better lyricist than he is a
vocalist.
:5. Philosophical Cancer by Howard Zimmerlee (perf. by Howard Z.
:and Jesse W.)
Quasi-philosophical, but even so, the elements, as Dr. Watson
told Sherlock, came together.
:6. Something by Courtney Clausien (perf. by Courtney C.)
I don't like these type of poems because they are gorged with
hateful, male-bashing rhetoric.
:7. Bulbadie with the Television On by Jeff Lindhart (perf. by
:Jeff L.)
Bravo! When it started I had no idea where it was going, and
when it stopped I didn't know where I was, but it was a hell of a
ride along the way. This was mind-blowing. I can't rave
enough. This is definitely "Best of" material.
:8. Luke's Assignment by Elysia Hansel (performed by Elysia H.)
This was a great twist on a subject that could have been serious
and rather mondane. I really like Elysia's funny stuff. I've
told her to resurrect her stand-up. I'd enjoy it.
:9. The Pitch by Grant Tracey and Ron Sandvich (perf. by Grant T.
:Ron s. and Nick Schmitz)
I must admit, I've never seen Apocalypse Now. The audience and I
probably would have understood this skit better if we had the
film knowledge that Grant does. Good job all the same.
:10. Beyond Heaven by Pete Feltman (perf. by Pete F.)
I have this thing where when I listen to music for the first
time, I phase out the lyrics and pay attention to the music.
With that said, I believe this is Pete's best work I've heard to
date. If it hasn't been done yet, I urge you to put together a
CD.
:11. 2 Poems by Katie Frederich-Schector (perf. by Katie F.S.)
I don't remember these peoms, perhaps because there was so many
other poems to try to sort out. I assume they were good, though.
:12. Uncomfortable Silence by Nick Castor (perf. by Nick C. and
:Luke P.)
This was interesting, because I didn't experience the emotions
this skit was supposed to elicit. I felt sorry for Nick; I
didn't hope for his failure. In the same breathe, I didn't feel
that Luke was really bastardly. Maybe I'm just a cold,
emotionless shell of a man.
:13. Why God Why? or Oww, This Hurts by Jesse Wozniak (perf. by

This was the gutsiest skit to date. I applaud you.
:14. The Most Sophisticated Play in the Whole Damn World by Luke

another's idea. It allows for some interesting material.

Hey everyone, No Shame just keeps on improving. This one
may have been abit heavy on the poetry, but I suppose I'm

From: snaser@uni.edu
Time: Mon, 03-Dec-2001 05:53:42 GMT IP: 134.161.68.100
I need to clarify my comment. The subject of this poem--as I
perceived it--was what I characterize as radical feminism. Make
no mistake, I'm all for femisim; what I don't like is feminism
that protrays men as complete, horrible bastards and makes
masculinity a crime against humanity. This was the vibe I picked
up from this poem. And that's why I didn't exactly love this
poem. Maybe I missed something.
I've never denied that Jesse's poems are hateful. They are. As
for some of your poetry, perhaps I haven't fully understood its
meaning.
Thanks for pointing that out and allowing me to explain myself.

the other didn't make much sense probably because i was really

a teenager swears to protect the girl he loves till they die.
then she dumps him. he still keeps his promise but does it
without her knowing about him.(if it were a video there's be
shots of him slipping money under her door, taking out a couple
thugs that were going to mug her ect.)he watchers her live a long
healthy(unknowing) life and after she dies he confesses. this is

you misunderstand radical feminism--which by no means trumps you
out of your opinion, but you are using a specific term in a very
not specific, negative, and *wrong* way. it would be like me
pointing at a triangle and saying, "wow! it's so geometric!"
well.........yes, but no.
and of course, you are free to like or dislike any poetry you
choose (i wasn't highly affirming of this particular point
before). i think, however, that art that intends to disturb,
offend, or pull people out of our prescribed places has its own
value, and i wonder if courtney's poem has been considered as
such.

first of all, i thought Courtney's poem was a total success. it
was well written, and conveyed her message effectively. it was a
very bitter poem...that is not meant to be taken as criticism or
acclaim. i can relate to Seth... it does get frustrating when you
are a member of the gender under fire when I consider my own
personal character to be above the stereotype of those being
attacked, yet this very odd-looking piece of genetalia tells me I
am a member of a group of wrong-doers.
i have experienced this same phenomenon in my multicultural
literature class. much of the work that we read describe all-too-
uncomfortably all of the horrors the white race (which i am also
a member of) have committed. why is it uncomfortable? because i
have white skin just like those oppressors who came from europe
to fuck up what was at that time a perfectly good piece of land,
and a lot of people who were just fine beforehand, therefore i am
put into a classification system with them.
is it fun to read works such as these? no
is it worth reading works such as these? yes
can we still learn from works such as these? by god, we better
I would like to congratulate Courtney, not only for a very
powerful debut, but actually leaving an impression worthy of this
much thought and discussion. That's really what art is all about,
when you get right down to it.

Well stated, Luke. I whole-heartedly agree.
I will never say that Courtney should not have performed her
work. I'm glad she did. I will never say it was not artistic.
It absolutely was. I won't say that it wasn't thought-provoking;
it obviously was. What I will say is that I felt uncomfortable
because I do not see myself as representative of the group under
fire. Thus I felt uncomfortable. I failed to choose the words
to properly convey this in the first place.
You're right, Katie. I am ignorant of the true meaning of the
term "radical feminism." I do not know nearly as much about
feminism in general as I want or should. If you are willing, I
hope you could help explain such things to me to set me straight.

the short version (which is still pretty long):
feminism is, like all -isms, a collection of thoughts that
constructs our worldview. "feminism" is a broad (no pun
intended) heading that includes many different subheadings. if
we separate these headings by *what* different feminists think
(instead of, for instance, *when* different feminists
think/thought), we can list these subheadings: liberal feminism,
radical feminism, marxist/materialist feminism, lesbian feminism,
womanism/womynism, ecofeminism, etc. here are some quick, far-
from-complete, easy-to-digest definitions:
LIBERAL FEMINISM: what you're used to. gloria steinem (did i
spell that right?) is a liberal feminist, and now (the natl
organization for women) is a liberal feminist organization.
liberal feminists think the way the world works is okay, but
women should have equal access to that way.
RADICAL FEMINISM: isn't at all radical, gnarly, or rad. ;)
radical feminists think the way the world works is *not* okay;
instead, we think the way the world works is inherently biased
against people who are not men. a rather lengthy example:
consider that most positions of power in this culture are biased
toward people whose first priority is their work. consider also
that most positions of womanhood in this culture do not
prioritize work first. consider that if one wants a high-paying,
high-status, high-power position in her or his career, one must
first educate oneself until one is at least twenty-five or
thirty, then devote massive amounts of time and energy to one's
job for at least five or ten years to climb the corporate ladder.
perhaps all these requirements are fair. when we consider
further, however, that women have traditionally borne (sp?) and
bred children, and that an unmarried, child-free woman is still
something of an oddity, and that a woman who wants it all can
either climb that corporate ladder with a child swaddled to her
hip or put off child-rearing until she is over thirty-five and in
a position that does not afford her much time to devote to her
family..............i find it difficult to not realize the unique
bind women face.
radical feminists (such as myself, so prepare yourself for pure
katie opinion) might say the system is rotten because it forces
people to choose between family and career, because it places
more status and power with the people who choose career, and
because it still expects women to choose a family in some
capacity. radical feminists might say that a system that makes
people bad parents is a system with wonky priorities, and that
said system poisons the culture that contains it. radical
feminists might expect a greater revolution.
MARXIST/MATERIALIST FEMINISM: says that women are most severely
manipulated because we are expected to contribute massive amounts
of work to society (through child-rearing and housekeeping)
without compensation. i think. i don't know much about this.
LESBIAN FEMINISM: deeply resents the assumption that women must
love men to find complete love, and considers this to be the crux
of subordination. i think this is an awesome argument, although
it's not without its faults (for instance, it is as unfair to
closet a straight woman as a lesbian for the sake of feminism as
it is to closet a lesbian woman as straight for the sake of
catholicism). my favorite argument is from andrea dworkin, who
insists that, until power differences between men and women
disappear, all heterosexual sex is rape. again, not without
faults (for instance, andrea dworkin herself has sex with men and
women alike), but hella fascinating all the same. a couple
notes: not all lesbian feminists are seperatists, and "political
lesbian" is pretty much another term for "active lesbian
feminist."
WOMANISM/WOMYNISM: rejects feminism as primarily concerned with
middle-class, middle-age wasp women (who are as close to the
powerful class as one can get without a penis). led by alice
walker (who wrote "the color purple" and whose daughter, rebecca
walker, leads the third-wave feminist movement and spoke here
when i was a freshman), womanism/womynism tries to expand the
scope of feminism to women/womyn of color and......others.
again, i don't know everything.
ECOFEMINISM: claims that the subordination of women mimicks our
subordination of mother earth.
if you're still reading this, it really is the short version.
sorry. i don't think any of us are really in disagreement over
courtney's poem, but i do think you must understand that our
intent in writing art that criticizes powerful people is not to
make you recognize that your penis or our skin is *wrong*, but
that it is *powerful.* i hear both luke and seth acknowledging
some confused guilt about their sex and race, but neither of you
can help that you're white men. what i don't think you realize
is the power your sex and race afford you--and when courtney
writes about woman-love usurping the power of the dick, and i
write about cutting off all my hair, we are both writing about
some power men are afforded that women aren't necessarily.

you know i was just thinking about this...weve been pretty
flexible in the past about submissions that dont have a title.
but come springtime when neil, howard, woz, goodrich, and myself
have to pick the order for BEST OF, its going to get pretty
sticky trying to sift through our brains clouded with memories
and/or drugs. so if you could attach a distinguishing title to
each of your pieces, it would make things easier. plus we dont
have to say "hey, remember that one poem about the girl with
teeth? could you find that one and do it again?" you catch my
drift.

As I am writing this response, My TOYS Soundtrack is making
errors in play, which, of course, may mean scratches. And, of
course, I was hoping to write a response according to this
Soundtrack. I think I scratched it while walking one windy
day. I only blame myself, and, perhaps, the weather( I have
some difficulty attributing blame to an inanimate object,
though.)
Yes, I ordinarily do not like to respond to everything, because
I am somewhat reserved in normal life, but I must say that I
enjoy all acts of creativity, and, in particular, I enjoyed
seeing "The Tale of the Red Dragon" if I may enjoy such a show
on this "No Shame" website. I did find, however, that the fact
that some performers also perform at "No Shame" that it rendered
my concern invalid.
I hope that people who read this response find the time to
attend: I especially found the performance of the Nightingale to
be exceptional. Wow. I have to say that she was truly
exceptional! Keep in mind, I do not underestimate the
performance of the other actors, additionally!
I liked seeing Jeff Johnson in many varied roles, and, of
course, I enjoyed the humor.
I look forward to the play next weekend, which the title
suggests involves TEXAS.

And "I cant beleive UNI and the Gallaghers would support such
disrespect" and "expect a large angry mob protesting this

for those of you who are worried, corpus christi is not--let me
repeat, IS NOT--funded even a little bit by theatre uni, the
gbpac, or any of those other lovely state-run organizations.
(that, btw, might have been the most brilliant decision the
production team made about this lovely show.)
corpus christi is presented for your enjoyment by unista, the
uni student theatre association (get it? it's an acronym).
unista's shows are wholly produced using past profits from
ticket sales. this means that no student fees, no taxes, and no
goddam anything out of your pocket that you didn't give
willingly went into this production. this means that the
separation of church and state is upheld. this means you can
bitch, you can picket, and you can boycott, but you cannot--let
me repeat, CANNOT--deny us our right to present this
breathtaking script to you in the cac thursday through saturday
nights at 7pm (for $4 at the door).

robin corsburg, you are totally hilarious. weve had some

awesome debut.
the jeff lenhart piece about digging up "friend" was fantastic.
i love the fact that nobody ever has any clue what to expect

pete feltman's tune really came across powerfully especially
on the heels of corpus christi. the blood was nice too.
howard's experimental piece with the 4 girls was really cool.
theres really nothing i enjoy more is when we see
something completely different from what were used to from

woz, did you write that first piece? all i remember is a bunch

well done to everyone else who performed also. have a

Hey everybody! This was a groin grabbingly great No Shame
and I wanted to be the first to review it, so I did!
1. ÊA NO SHAME EXPERIMENT (performed by Jesse
Wozniak) Also performed by howie, Jeff and Q
This got a much better reaction than I originally anticipated.
The idea came to me when I was simultaneously washing
my hair and relieving myself in th showers at about noon on
Friday. I hadn't written anything yet, and I was wishing I
owned a million monkeys to do it for me...and welll, one
thing led to another
2. ÊMEDITATIONS ON LOVE Ê(performed by Justin Hossle)
Anything in which a cat gets smashed by a chair is buttah in
my book
3. Ê22 Ê (performed by Katie Fredrick-Schector)
Katie has always been my poetic hero and continues to be.
Katie, if you ever put out a CD, I'll be the first one to buy it
4. ÊTHE SPEECH Ê(performed by Howard Zimmerle)
Any person that has ever even tried to exclusively date
another human being has heard this. I thought it was
fucking great, and a great stylystic departure
5. ÊLACK (performed by Pete Feltman)
In my mind, I don't think there's a better Pete Feltman song. I
like this one because he sounded mad ;) and the subject
matterial was so amazingly applicable that evening
6. ÊGEORGE WASHINGTON (performed by Jeff Lenhart)
Damn! I was honored just to be a part of this. how does he
do it? I would give $20 dollars and my left testicle to be able
to know how he writes those plays. Jeff, never, ever stop
writing! Also, he's a really nice guy, folks.
7. ÊRAPE (performed by Courtney Clausen)
Ouch. This one hurt to hear, but in the good way. I like the
way it ended with the glimmer of hope.
8. ÊBIN LADEN GONE WILD!!! THE NEW VIDEO AT
BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO
Ê Ê(performed by Justin Hossle and Josh Goodrich)
The improve was...well...odd, but it didn't stop me from
laughing my ass off! It wasn't just that they got an excellent
set of lines from the audience, but also that they were able
to incorporate them so well
9. ÊINTERMISSION (performed by Q)
I'd just like to say that I (and the others this was most likely
targeted at) don't hate all white males, it's just that most of
the harm done in America is done by white males. I like to
be able to think I can laugh at myself, though, and I did
laugh at this, so maybe I can
10. METAPHONIC TOY (Bridget Eggers)
I don't believe Bridget has done anything serious before-I
liked this
11. STAND-UP (performed by Robin Corsburg)
This was the best stand up we've ever had there, with the
only real contender being Josh Fitkin's first stand up. by the
way, where the hell is that guy?
12. JOIN ME IN THE FIGHT (peformed by Jesse Wozniak)
Just remember, I did at leas point out that I'm a cracker. This
poem was a little rushed to get it done in ime for the show,
so I think it could've been better, but I still liked it
13. PROTEST (performed by Elysia Hansel and Justin
Hossle)
That cta guy had me so totally going on this. Iw as actually
about to turn around and tell him to shut the hell up and that
it wasn't funny to ruin someone's hard work. good job
selling this you two.
14. A SYMPHONY OF SORTE (performed by Neil Van Gorder
and about
A) It's a Symphony of Scrot, but who's counting? Funny, in an
existential/esoteric/projectile vomit kind of way
15. JERKY FOR YOUR BRAIN (performed by Luke Pingle)
Once again, Luke punds out something not only artistically
rendered well, but defiant and through provoking. Keep it up.
Hey, I'll miss you all over break. If any No Shamers wander
through Fort Dodge, call me! I'm the only Wozniak in the
entire county phone book. Bye!

get it? get it? $.50 = two bits?? shee-yit. math humor = no

1. A NO SHAME EXPERIMENT (performed by Jesse Wozniak)
woz, i love you. i've said it many different times, many
different ways. however, i can't for the life of me remember
this skit. maybe i was drunk.
2. MEDITATIONS ON LOVE (performed by Justin Hossle)
justin, justin, justin. the creation of a monster.
3. 22 (performed by Katie Fredrick-Schector)
um........you missed the second "e" in FREDERICK--which is
slightly ironic, since the poem talked about my name. hm. ;)
4. THE SPEECH (performed by Howard Zimmerle)
it was good--no, i mean, really--but i wanted something more. i
wanted one of the chicks to just go nuts and say something
like, "so can i shave your head now and save your hair for my
voodoo doll?"
expect a full response in a poem.
(apologies, btw, to all voodoo practitioners reading this post.)
5. LACK (performed by Pete Feltman)
i think what i love most about your music is how much you
obviously love performing it. i'm not sure that a cd could
measure up to the real thing (which is a compliment, i hope).
6. GEORGE WASHINGTON (performed by Jeff Lenhart)
good good good good good apples. damn.
7. RAPE (performed by Courtney Clausen)
i'll go to the matt for this one too--i don't have half the
courage this grrl does, and fuck anyone who wants a poem about
rape to be a little more man-loving.
8. BIN LADEN GONE WILD!!! THE NEW VIDEO AT BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO
(performed by Justin Hossle and Josh Goodrich)
okay, again. can't remember a thing........maybe i was still
drunk. or maybe it was another cat incident kind of thing, and
i'm repressing.
9. INTERMISSION (performed by Q)
i think the act is almost better without the puke-bucket. :)
10. METAPHONIC TOY (Bridget Eggers)
i like the word "metaphonic," and i'm glad you're using it in
your title. really.
11. STAND-UP (performed by Robin Corsburg)
robin, someone told me you were performing friday, and i was way
excited. i always knew you were brilliant.
12. JOIN ME IN THE FIGHT (peformed by Jesse Wozniak)
i want to have a battle of the angry poets some day. at the end,
we might not have a winner or a loser, but the audience would
definitely be a helluva lot more informed (and probably ten times
more liberal, unless they're unthinking bastards).
(apologies to all the unthinking bastards reading this post.)
13. PROTEST (performed by Elysia Hansel and Justin Hossle)
hey, elysia? i know it was a joke and all, but would you write a
poem someday about whatever you were writing about? cuz i dug
it. lots. :)
hey, justin? the bloody demise of a moster. let it lie.
14. A SYMPHONY OF SORTE (performed by Neil Van Gorder and about 8
other dudes)
the title i'm reading here is not the title i heard friday
night. and those somersaults...................is that how you
spell somersault??
15. JERKY FOR YOUR BRAIN (performed by Luke Pingle)
very, very, very well-written. nice.

funny, funny, FUNNY!!!!!! i had some friends with me who had

first skit for them to see.
8. BIN LADEN GONE WILD!!! THE NEW VIDEO AT BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO

I'm gonna review 3 pieces and talk about another thing.
first off I was in exctasy. My body never felt so high from
laughing. I love nonsense pieces.
Katie's piece was fucking great. Here's why. word play,
delivery, thought -raisn in the sun-, character, and down right
sexiness. Yes, Sexiness.
Luke's piece hit a few things that I personally identified with.
I want a career in the ARTs too damn it!
Plus I see a real stylistic process happening in his work and a
few others. Putting pieces together then bringing these pieces
together in an unexpected way. Sexy.
I liked Howard's piece for the elements of truth that it
contained. If he's good enough to write this, then he's good
enough to be the next gospel writer. The Book of John, Matthew
and ....Howie?

Where the hell is Josh Fitkin??
:1. ÊA NO SHAME EXPERIMENT (performed by Jesse
I thought this was really random and really funny. Some people
apparently didn't get it, as they asked me stuff like "Why did you
start eating your shoelace", or "why did you hump me". Ignorant,
all of them.
:
:2. ÊMEDITATIONS ON LOVE Ê(performed by Justin Hossle)
Cats don't have feelings anyway, right? I thought this guy was
funny, but I hope when he comes back he does so sans cat.
:3. Ê22 Ê (performed by Katie Fredrick-Schector)
I think Katie is not a big fan of my work, to put it lightly, but
I'm certainly a fan of hers. I like to think that deep down we
both do the same things: write about what upsets us and angers
us, it's just talent and medium that make the difference. If I was
talented enough to write and perform angry poetry I would do it
too. I just choose comedy.
:4. ÊTHE SPEECH Ê(performed by Howard Zimmerle)
I've only been given this speech about 100 times in my life. I
think girls are just born with this already ingrained in them.
Note that this was the first piece that I wrote but wasn't in. I
was glad to hear from a lot of guys that this play really hit
home.
:5. ÊLACK (performed by Pete Feltman)
There are some people who I believe are better writers than me,
and some of them are so good at what they do that I don't think I
COULD ever be that good... Pete is one of those. I can't write
songs for crap and Pete seems to have a natural talent for it. I'm
sure he won't have too much trouble selling his CD.
:6. ÊGEORGE WASHINGTON (performed by Jeff Lenhart)
One of the nicest, most humble guys to do no shame in CF. When you
talk to him, you have no idea what is actually going on in this
man's head. This was like a plane flying out of control, going
nowhere, but leaving a jet trail that made a beautiful painting on
the night sky. I don't know how he does it, but he's making a
serious challenge for newcomer of the year.
:7. ÊRAPE (performed by Courtney Clausen)
Angry, angry girl. Of course, it's not like she can write a happy
poem about rape that praises those who commit such acts. I would
like to see her do something a little more uplifting, but this is
still good as is.
:8. ÊBIN LADEN GONE WILD!!! THE NEW VIDEO AT
:BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO
Not the best improv ever, but better than I could do. Audience
participation and running gags are two of my favorite things...
:9. ÊINTERMISSION (performed by Q)
This guy is one of a kind.
:10. METAPHONIC TOY (Bridget Eggers)
Always short, and I think it hit home for a lot of people in the
audience,male and female.
:11. STAND-UP (performed by Robin Corsburg)
Excellent material, and I think her delivery made it funnier. Keep
em comin.
:12. JOIN ME IN THE FIGHT (peformed by Jesse Wozniak)
Woz, you're a good poet, and you're liberal. Two good pluses.
However, sometimes I question what you write about (which is good,
at least you have me thinking instead of watching TV or
something). You criticized the shit in Afghanistan, but you also
criticized putting sanctions on Iraq. Basically, a country has
three choices... do nothing, sanctions, or attack. I challenge
Jesse and others to find better solutions before criticizing what
has been done. Just because Bush does something doesn't mean it's
wrong. If it is, think of something better.
:13. PROTEST (performed by Elysia Hansel and Justin
:Hossle)
I still wonder if this was planned or not. I think it was just for
the fact that Elysia didn't grab him by his scrote and throw him
offstage, plus the fact that it completed teh rule of comedy
threes.
:14. A SYMPHONY OF SORTE (performed by Neil Van Gorder
This whole thing was hit by a bag of WhatTheFuck.
:15. JERKY FOR YOUR BRAIN (performed by Luke Pingle)
I always appreciate how Luke doesn't do straight-forward pieces.
This was an excellent way to get your ideas out there. Good
treatment, and excellent material within.

everyone's names, I fucked up the writer/performer thingy, and
not to mention I am screwing up dates.
Perhaps I don't deserve to be part of the No Shame Board. I

and I think the other board members.
But when it comes right down it, I don't deserve to be a member

I need to be impeached from my chair.

Howard wrote this, but I get it from many people, so I thought
I'd address it. The best example I ever read on how to
respond to this argument is this. Suppose there's too much
crime in a city, so the police force decides it will shoot
anybody that goes outside. Now this does result in a drop in
crime. Would it be wrong of me to criticise it even though I
don't know any other way to stop crime? I don't think so. Also,
you are never limited to only 3 actions. There are a wealth of
things our government could do other than cluster bomb
innocent civilians

From: kfs@uni.edu
Time: Mon, 17-Dec-2001 02:29:20 GMT IP: 134.161.105.125
let me analyze this limited list of three choices (do we sense
subheadings here? oh, yes we do!):
1. SANCTIONS. hm. let me think. take a country--any country--
that pisses us off, and let's cut off the populace's access to
food and medicine. bullshit, i cheerily say, bullshit. the
obvious effect of such action is the starvation of poor people in
said country, the continued affluence of powerful people in said
country, and the elevated status of said powerful people in said
country by the said poor people who do not starve ("castro's a
good guy--those fuckhead americans starved everyone else in the
village, but he shelters me, protects me, and makes a good life
for me as long as i cooperate").
of course, i only apply the bullshit theory to food and medicine
sanctions.
2. ATTACK. short of genocide, i can't imagine a world situation
where i would advocate american intervention. however, since
america tends to not give a shit about genocide *at all* (oh,
yes, even hitler's holocaust didn't faze us--you did know that
jews were in camps until the 60s, didn't you?), i can't imagine a
world situation warranting american intervention that i would
support.
3. DO NOTHING. like we did when we first heard of the taliban
takeover? like we did when we learned of the forced
powerlessness of afghani women? like we do when we daily ignore
the direct connection between our ceaseless overconsumption of
fossil fuels and our entanglement in the middle east?? the
nothing we have already done points toward the changes americans
need to make.
we need to develop alternative energy sources. we need to use
less energy. we need to ride more bikes, watch less television,
take shorter showers, and both make and waste less food. we need
to simplify, and we need to thoroughly investigate the companies
that produce the shit we consume--because there is a
responsibility that accompanies consuming, and we are taught to
ignore that.
we need to ignore cnn, the new york times, and most other
american-based news media. any news source that reported on
jennifer lopez's marriage AT ALL needs to be discounted
completely. american news is another capitalist organization,
and until the masses cease to be sold by entertainment, the news
will cater to that demand with crappy, entertaining, unimportant
supply. we must dirty ourselves with the mud of the world
instead of the shit of america.
we must realize that bush might be our president, but he does not
control our lives. what federal action has actually changed how
you live in the past year? the past five years? ever??? so
figure out what the hell you care about, what the hell you want
to do about it, and fucking start. if it means dropping out of
college and camping on capitol hill until someone up there
finally realizes that YOU MEAN IT, GODDAMMIT, do it! every
single thought in your head is useless until you're somehow
screaming with every movement.
you say we can sanction, attack, or do nothing. i say we can
refuse to stupidly punish this act of terrorism, change our
lives, and prevent to a high degree further american ignorance.
(ps: you've heard that bush is about to back out of the nuclear
arms agreement, yes? i'll go out on a limb: that is WRONG, and
bush is STUPID. makes you wonder who's really in control.)

No Shame is my heroin. Luckily, No Shame is sort of legal.
:1. A NO SHAME EXPERIMENT by Jesse Wozniak (performed by Woz,
:Howard Zimmerle, Jeff Lenhart)
Maybe it's just me and I'm loopy, but I seem to remember seeing
an SNL skit with a similar premise. If so, I enjoyed this one
all the same, and it probably didn't really violate any
copyright laws....
:2. MEDITATIONS ON LOVE by Justin Hossle (performed by Justin H)
This "skit" (for a lack of a better word to discribe whatever
the hell this really was) first happened on a four-hour car ride
from home to school. I was probably recounting a story without
an ending or really even a point when Justin started meowing.
He produced an imaginary cat from under the dashboard and
commanded me to pet it; when I reluctantly did so, he rolled
down the window and threw it out. This continued--with
variations on the cat's demise--the whole trip home.
Occasionally, I still laugh at it.
:3. 22 or THE JEWISH POEM by Katie Frederick-Schector (Katie F-S)
I don't really recall the jist of the poem because I got caught
up in the alliteration and assonance and sheer poetic quality.
A hardcopy of the poem would be appreciated.
:4. THE SPEECH by Howard Zimmerle (performed by Samantha Dean
:and 3 other girls I don't know)
If I ever had a girlfriend, I'm sure I would have heard this
speech. Good job conveying its "universality" by having four
girls perform it.
:5. LACK by Pete Feltman(performed by Pete Feltman)
Sometimes I can't hear the lyrics over the music. I can't wait
to pick up a CD.
:6. GEORGE WASHINGTON by Jeff Lenhart(performed by Jeff
:Lenhart, Woz, Q, Neil Van Gorder, Elysia Hansel)
I don't know how he does it, but Jeff continually comes from
left field with new and fresh material. Rookie of the year.
:7. RAPE by Courtney Clausen (performed by Courtney Clausen)
The problem I had with this poem was the apparent lack of
metaphor, simile, or any kind of poety imagery.
:8. BIN LADEN GONE WILD!!! THE NEW VIDEO AT BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO
:by Justin Hossle and Josh Goodrich(performed by Justin Hossle
:and Josh Goodrich)
Maybe it's just me and I'm loopy, but I seem to remember seeing
a Whose Line? skit with a similar premise.... This was a good
effort and it can only get better if they decide to make this a
regular or quasi-regular feature. It reminds me of the days of
improv at high school speech contests, which were always fun.
And, if I may be so arrogant, several of my lines were used.
:9. INTERMISSION by Q(performed by Q)
I just didn't get the message of the first song, and the second
was fun, in a dorky sort of way.
:10. METAPHONIC TOY by Bridget Eggers (performed by Bridget E.)
I don't remember this poem, because, unlike Katie F-S, I had
been drinking hot chocolate and peppermint schnapps earlier in
the evening, and it must have caught up with me.
:11. STAND-UP by Robin Corsburg(performed by Robin Corsburg)
Has she performed once before? She has, hasn't she? Maybe I
was really drunk. Good, classic stand-up. Someone told me
afterward that she had been offered to go professional. I
understand why.
:12. JOIN ME IN THE FIGHT by Jesse Wozniak (peformed by Jesse
:Wozniak)
I honestly don't recall the actual subject of the poem.
:13. PROTEST by Elysia Hansel(performed by Elysia Hansel and
:Justin Hossle)
I knew this was a set-up beforehand, but I would really like to
hear Elysia's poem in its entirely.
:14. A SYMPHONY OF SCROTE by Neil Van Gorder(performed by NVG,
:Luke Pingel, Woz, Howard Z, Josh G, Q, Justin H, Pete F)
Nice experiment; however, an experiment in what I know not.
:15. JERKY FOR YOUR BRAIN by Luke Pingel(performed by Luke
:Pingel)
Well-written. Very cohesive. I'd go as far to say "Best of"
material.
Great show Friday night. Is there is a cap on the number of
skits performed? Or is there a limit on the number of skits
performed by each individual? Justin told me that he and Elysia
couldn't do a skit because all the slots were full. Just
curious.
Everybody have a good break, and see you in a few weeks.

Katie,
I agree with pretty much everything that you said.
However I don't think that foreign policy and domestic policy are
simple matters at all.
The one thing in history that has always defined foreign policy is
the question "What is best for our country?"
In the U.S. this means "What is the best for our economy, i.e.
what is best for the corporations that run America, what is best
for capitalism?"
Never does that mean what is best for individuals, cause
nationalism is, sadly in many ways and not so sad in others, the
most powerful force in world politics today.
The world is a dirtyuglybagofshit in many ways and Americans are
often fatlazycuntwhores in their habits and desires.
Has history changed any of these things?

i didn't mean to imply that foreign policy and domestic policy
are easily unwound puzzles.....................instead, i want to
argue that there are better ways of making sense of the world as
individuals than supporting the policy decisions our leaders
without scrutiny. i guess i didn't directly address howard's
demand for better solutions, but i can't recommend a thorough
alternative for the president because i don't know enough about
the position and its limitations to say much more than, "hey,
bush and dick, i think you're both cheating assholes and i don't
agree with how you 'represent' me now."
what i can recommend is a thorough alternative for changing the
world as an individual american citizen--because, given our
current leadership, i believe a grassroots revolution is the only
way this world's gonna change. and blah blah blah.

Subj: BoardRoom: TOP 10 of NST THIS FALL
From: CENTERWRAP@aol.com
Time: Tue, 18-Dec-2001 05:24:35 GMT IP: 24.4.252.116
Hello everyone! I just thought I would post my top 10 favorable
moments of NST this past fall. This is NO WAY reflects what the
rest of the NST Board will have for the BEST OF NO SHAME THEATRE
in late spring of next semester. This is solely my opinions and
away we go!!!
10. SIMPLY JOSH EPISODES
Too bad he is leaving us next semester. I always loved his new
and creative lines..."I have put on the equivalent of a ten year-
old child!"
9. LUKE PINGLE PUTTING A DILDO IN HIS EAR
This speaks for itself.
8. KATIE F.S.'s MAD, MAD POETRY
Katie calls her poems mad but I think they are beautiful. I
watch the reactions from the crowd during all of NST sketches
and the crowd always seems to be tuned in right to every last
breath of Katie's poems.
7. NEIL'S BALL ROLLING CONTEST
Don't ask me what it meant and why I did it. It was fun and
thinking back it makes me laugh out loud in my bed at 3 a.m.
Plus it stresses that NO SHAME should be an experimental forum.
6. ROBIN CORSBURG'S STAND-UP COMEDY
I think sometimes many of us forget that NO SHAME Comedy can be
completely free of sexual innuendos, weed, beer, and camels.
Robin did say the f-word once. OH MY GOD! But it always nice to
see a spice of cleanliness in NO SHAME forum. But no more Robin.
For now on dirty jokes only:)
5. Q = AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION
If it is one thing I love most, it is audience participation.
The ability to feel like you have control while the audience is
still guiding you through. Ever since stump leg man, the crowd
looks forward to participation in Q's sketches.
4. PETE FELTMAN
I always feel inspired after hearing music from Pete and he is
always great!!! Most performers, including myself, have off
nights but Pete you have yet to fail. Pete teach me how to sing.
3. SEDUCTION BY WOZMAN
If I have any pull, I want to see this at Best of NST. I don't
think I have every laughed all the way through an entire sketch
until seeing this. Oh it was fucking hilarious! And then Becca
at the end rejecting you for Howard...I mean...well it was a
really good sketch.
2. DEBUT OF JEFF LENHART
I have seen Jeff at many NO SHAMES before and he even talked to
me about my performance in Picasso at the Lapin Agile. In my
mind, this was one of the strongest debuts in No Shame history
and his stuff gets better and better.
AND #1
ERICA ENGEL TALKING ABOUT HER BOYFRIENDS YOU KNOW WHAT.
I don't think I have ever seen someone take as big as risk as
her before and that is respectable. In addition, I think this
may be the most SHAMEFUL presentation ever at least here in
Cedar Falls.
I would like to end that I feel everyone who performs at No
Shame deserves a round of applause. Many people put their necks
on the line and sometimes they win, sometimes they lose.
Also thank you to the fans who keep this going strong. You guys
have made this one of the best NO SHAME charters in the world!!!
I love all of you, except Justin Hossle:)
Please feel free to comment on my selections and if you want to
add on, then feel free to go ahead. Later everybody!

It's a break. He's not free, and there's so much more work to
be done, but hey, he's alive. I'm not saying it's my poem that
did it, but hey, you never do know ;)

I want to join in the midsemester bandwagon, and put down
my best of picks
1)The True Meaning of Love-Josh Fitkin
2)True Love, Lobsters, and a Bear-Howard Zimmerle
3)The Little Tittanic-Jeff L
4)Jackie Chan Song-Q
5)Dragon Flies-Grant Tracy
6) Blowin' Through the Changes, A Mime Like Me, To Frank
O'Hara-Luke Pingel
7)Escape Attempts-Neil VG
8)Anything by Kayie F-S
9)A Peter Song
10) Hopefully something I've done that people thought
warrented being seen again
Those are the top 10 that jumped out at me and said "Hey,
I'm best of material" Actually, many more did, but I didn't
want to list every play done, so I limited to these 10, which I
think is a pretty gosh darn good list

Did anyone go to the main NST homepage and check out the new
Shame-O-Meter? We're second behind Iowa City. More importantly
though, what the hell does that mean??

Hey all,
Sounds like I have missed some classic NST. IT seems like I was
ALWAYS busy on the Fridays of NS and free on the off weeks. I
checked the website after being busy the past couple No shames,
and saw such a bevy of postings. I must be honest and tell you
that seeing that I was humbly sellected by some for Best Of made
me cry and was the best Christmas Present EVER! I hope and plan
to make no shame part of my life again next semester. Believe
it or not, but I have actually be touring around Iowa doing the
entertainment at Church christmas banqs this last month. I've
got the Febreeze bit completly streamlined and nailed. Although
I couldn't do ALL of my bits at the churchs, No Shame has
deffinatly gotten me off to a great start. It is as if No Shame
is a giant nurchering mother that young amature playrights,
poets, comedians, songwriters and the like, can come suckle off
her giant, inspirational tiets. Let Freedom ring from the bowels
of No Shame Theater, and all that other stuff.
Un-Shamefully yours,
Josh

From: howzi@hotmail.com

OK... been doin some thinkin. And my head hurts. Slight hunger
twinge in my lower abdomen. It is currently snowing. For all
these reasons and more, you should consider a career in nuclear
power.
OK, I don't know what the hell I just wrote, but here are some
ideas for best of no shame (in no particular order, just like the
CDs at Co-op Records):
1. A seduction by Woz... OK, so the idea was a little borrowed,
but where else can I hear pimp music AND get hit on by Becca
Wagoner?? No, that was an honest question...
2. Jerky for the soul, by Luke. Read my review from last time...
3. The Penis Play by Erica... I hated it, but you gotta admit, it
sparked more controversy than anything else in the history of
NST.
4. The hair poem by KFS. This was touching, and for a nice change
I could actually understand what the hell she was talking about.
5. So the Vibrator Shorted Out by Elysia... it wasn't textbook
Elysia angry, but i liked it better, so fuck off.
6. Tie between the day at the fair monologue and the trapped
boxer/python monologue by NVG. If we had enough spaces I'd love
to see them both, but it will depend on whether we need funny or
serious in the real Best of.
7. The first Simply Josh- this showed us that thsi guy was
something special. To date it was probably his funniest material,
short of the stalker thing. I'm still bitter about the stalker
thing because I had finally convinced a girl to go there on a
date with me, and she was freaked out by the first piece and
almost left crying. Well, she found another guy, so fuck her :-)
8. Tie between the pizza challenge and Weekend News by Goodrich.
I'm leaning towards pizza, but that could be because dinner is on
the table...
More to follow!
Subj: BoardRoom: more of that funky stuff

Insomnia has kicked in... I'm stuck in Fort Dodge, so I'm not
sure why the town hasn't bored me to sleep yet. Anyway, here's
more of my vote for best of:
10: (or whatever number I was up to) Some song, by Pete. Not sure
which... personally I liked the acid rain one, but who knows.
11: Bulbadie with the television on by Jeff L. While this may not
be representative of Jeff in general, it will be a great change
of pace for the best of show. I would also like to express my
support for either the Titanic one or the fat DJ one from the
last show.
12: Something by me. Hopefully someone out there found a favorite
among some of my work somewhere. I might suggest A Non-Drinking
PSA, or possibly True Love, Lobsters, and a Bear. Oh, and for the
record, I saw the girl who the Amy character in True Love was
based on, and yep, I still want her. (dejected sigh)
You know, there's still room here. Maybe a poem by Courtney
Clausen... maybe Grant Tracey's story, maybe that other prof's
story (it seemed to be a little better than Grant's anyway),
maybe Q... maybe someone who I'm completely forgetting about. Or
maybe we need more plays about large penises. How about more
nudity? Woz and I were the only ones doing any of that crap this
year... where's the nudity? I wanna see buns, damnit!! Oh, I just
thought of one:
13: That standup from that girl in the last no shame, by that
girl who did standup at the last no shame. I can't remember her
name... Robin Corsberg is popping into my head, but I'm not sure
if that's right or if my right brain has kicked in...
Time to go to bed, I'm rambling.

Hello No Shamers! I hope everyone had a great a safe, fulfilled
holiday and blah, blah, blah...it's time to party!!! I hope you
are all coming to Luke's for New Years Eve. Hell I am because
Luke is really cool and...luke is...yeah anyway it will be
awesome!!!
Hey Howard I read your last message and I think it is a bummer
about the whole Amy thing. This might make you feel awesome. I
recently showed a bunch of pictures of my college career. One
that popped up was of you freshman year in Dancer. My sister,
who is an ISU cheerleader as well as her sorority sisters think
you are hot. So I definitely think it is Amy with the problem
and not you my brother from another mother!
Take care all!
GOODRICH
p.s. Please Neil, stop sexual harassing me!
