Subj: BoardRoom: Happy New Year No Shamers!
From: dbest@cstone.net
Time: Tue, 01-Jan-2002 18:09:29 GMT IP: 209.145.85.56
Happy New Year everybody!
Todd, you've gotten lax on putting out the lists, my friend.
I just sent in my What I Learned in College Script for anyone
interested in seeing it. Wanted to fully reference it before
posting it in case someone might want to sue me for plagiarism.
Man, that was a bitch. Can I say bitch on this message board?
Well, I just did it again. So there.
Can't believe that I once upon a time learned all that stuff.
Guess that's what you pay all that money for. But sad to say I
think I've retained about 2% of it. Optimistically.
Was going to do a companion piece of what I really learned in
college but it's sounding too much like a graduation speech, so
I think I'm going to bag it. Will get into more
improv/beingness pieces instead.
So I've ranted on here far too long to keep anyone's interest.
Hopefully this will encourage the rest of you out there to do
some ranting yourselves. If Dan here deserves time on the
message board, certainly so do you.
Have an excellent whatever, everyone.
Dan
PS Todd I liked your reviewing pieces. Keep that up.
PS Sean, if you haven't posted Chickenpussy yet, please do
(guess I should have checked before writing this masterpiece).
PS Lee/Annaliese. Now that Edward's over, you ready to throw
that BONS viewing party?

I just wanted to say that I had a great time on Friday, and to
remind everyone not to try to learn on their own. It can be very
dangerous. You need an experienced teacher and the right
equipment. But thanks for letting me do it. I wanted to start
this year of No Shame with a bang.
Subj: BoardRoom: Announcements
From: liveartslabco@aol.com
Time: Sat, 05-Jan-2002 23:58:21 GMT IP: 205.188.197.51
Ok,
1) sorry about the list thing, I have been very swamped lately
with the live arts rave review and getting the 10 minute play
festival started.
2) Ursula will now be doing the list posting, though everyone is
encouraged to do list posting a reviews, ala the Iowa City style
of message posting. Also Ursula is going to be serving this
year as the No Shame Steward for Live Arts.
What the heck is that? Well, I will give a more detailed
explanation, or rather, Ursula will when she has been fully
briefed, but essentially Live Arts has this really cool system
of empowering its volunteers, and similar to the Actors Equity
system, when you do volunteer work at Live Arts, and that is
anything from swinging a hammer to directing a mainstage show,
you earn Ensemble Points. After earning a certain number of
Ensemble Points you are eligable for Ensemble membership. The
Ensemble are the core base of the volunteers and Live Arts is
sort of unique in giving their volunteers a very active role
helping to actually run the dang theatre, not just work in it.
The Ensemble have 9 elected officers to sort of guide and
protect the ensemble's interests and represent those to the Live
Arts staff. These are the Ensemble Committee. The Chair of the
EC (currently Clinton Johnston) actually sits on the Board of
Directors of Live Arts during their term of office...which is
totally cool that a theatre allows its volunteer base to have
representation at a level higher than its own Artistic Director,
who doesn't sit on the Board of Directors. Wow, Live Arts is
the coolest. Anyway, So what is the big deal about membership
in the Ensemble? Well, for example, the Lab space at live arts
is managed BY THE ENSEMBLE! That's right, Nearly everything in
the lab space is initiated, produced, and executed by the
volunteers, not the Live Arts staff. No Shame itself was an
ensemble initiative, so when no shame says "its your theatre,
make it what you want" we really mean it about the lab too.
Each night of participation in no shame, no matter how many
pieces you act in, wrote, directed, whatever, is worth one
Ensemble Point, and at 19 points you are eligable to request
official membeship and begin taking part in Live Arts beyond
your Friday Night revels.
Ok, enough of that stuff, if you have the points, or want to
start documenting the points by going through the archive, or
want to find out more about Ensemble membership you can talk to
me or Ursula about it.
3)The 10 Minute play contest winners have been chosen--and will
be announced shortly
4) Best Of No Shame will now be quarterly. Start making
suggestions for the next BEST OF NO SHAME which will be
happening in the Lab space on February 28th and March 1st!!!!
Ok, thats all for now

Subj: BoardRoom: 10 MINUTE PLAY CONTEST RESULTS!!!!
From: liveartslabco@aol.com
Time: Sun, 06-Jan-2002 21:11:48 GMT IP: 152.163.205.74
First of all, thank you to everyone who submitted!
We had submissions from over 20 playwrights and some of them
submitted multiple entries,so it was a very very difficult
selection process, which is why we are only today getting out
the announcment which was intended for Jan 4th at the latest!
I'd also like to say that almost all the plays that were
submitted that were 5 pages or less would make wonderful No
Shame pieces, and I am quite certain that if rehearsed and
produced at one of the no shames between now and the Festival,
would almost certainly be selected for the Best of No Shame
performances, which will now be held quarterly. The first Best
of No Shame for 2002 will take place the Thursday and Friday
following this 10 minute play festival, and I would be happy to
assist in getting these shorter submitssions "No Shame Ready" in
time for BONS consideration. (for more info see No Shame
Theatre - CHARLOTTESVILLE )
AND NOW THE CONTEST RESULTS:
Third Prize Winners, who will receive three months of
Playwright's Lab Membership beginning in March of 2002, are:
Sage Merritt (THE DISGRUNTLED AMAZONS), Brandon Allison (MY
ROOM), John Rue (NIXON IN HELL), Ray-Grant Tate (THE ROSE),
Shirin Ali (GOODBYE, DAD), Flower Miller (THE MOST MISERABLE
PERSON ALIVE)
Second Prize Winners, who will receive six months of
Playwright's Lab Memberships beginning in March of 2002, are:
Jane Jones (THE TAINTED VIRGIN), Leeyanne Moore (INTERMISSION,
I'M SORRY I CAN'T MAKE IT TONIGHT), Elizabeth Rose Fuller (THE
WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE, A GAME WORTH PLAYING), Clinton
Johnston (GETTING SOMETHING OFF HER CHEST), Jennifer Funk (YOU
MUST BE WILL)
First Prize Winners, who will receive eight months of
Playwright's Lab Membership AND a 6 month free pass to NO SHAME
THEATRE beginning January of 2002 are:
BILL'S GHOSTS, by Bill Davis
TILL THE WHEELS FALL OFF, by Todd Ristau
(submitted annonymously, I did not vote on this play)
THE NARRATOR, by Sommer Browning
OBJECT OF DESIRE, by Kathryn Stolzenbach
THE TRIVIAL REVOLUTIONARY, by Madeline Harvey
HOW TO BE LOVERS, by Danny Grinberg
Everyone who submitted is invited to become members of the
playwright's lab, which meets every sunday in the lab space
(unless something else is scheduled in there--like a performance-
-in which case you will be advised where the alternate meeting
space is.) An informational brochure will accompany your
submission when it is returned, along with a critique of the work
(s) submitted. This may take a while since there were so many
submissions, so if you have interest in the playwright's lab,
try to come to the meeting tonight (7:00pm in the lab space) if
you can--though I know its short notice.
At the next meeting of the playwright's lab, January 13th in the
lab space at 7:00, we will have a public reading of all six
contest winners. Writers you must find your own readers for
this reading. Everyone who is interested in directing one of
the plays, designing or working on one of the shows, or
auditioning is encouraged to come that night to hear the plays.
Directors MUST be chosen by the 20th.
On the Playwright's Lab meeting of Jan. 20th, directors will
also attend and we will discuss what to look for in auditions,
and how to hold call backs. Auditions for the festival will be
held as a cattle call for all shows on 25th and 26th of this
month, times and place to be announced. All writers and
directors must attend. Call backs will be held independently on
the 27th, all casting choices will be made at the next meeting
of the Lab that night, beginning at 7:00, all writers and
directors must attend. No one leaves the room until all shows
are cast.
Rehearsals will be at the individual production teams
discretion, but each sunday at 7:00 we will have a production
meeting with all writers, directors, and designers.
Sunday the 17th will be a closed staged reading of all the shows
in the lab space, only the casts and crews of the shows will be
allowed to attend.
Monday the 18th will be load in and tech. This will be a late
night.
Tuesday the 19th and Wednesday the 20th of February will be
dress rehearsals in the space.
We open Thursday the 21st and run through the 24th, with two
performances on the 24th, a mantinee and an evening show.
I expect all performances to be sold out since there are only 75
seats in the house. There are no comps, for anyone. If you
take up a seat you will pay for a ticket.
That about sums it up--start spreading the word to actors,
directors, and potential audience--the earlier the buzz the
greater the involvement in this.
Again, thanks to everyone for your submissions!

I like this a lot! Perhaps it will serve to goad the NO Shame
population to put in more effort. :)
Of the top of my head, I'd have to vote for Jane's "Firebreathing"
to entertain those in line right before people get to come inside.
Then Todd's "Abandon the Theatre, for it is going to BURN!"(ooh,
thematic!)
I think Sean's "My Lawn" by Dave the Angry Suburban Poet and the
infamous Chicken-Pussy are both worthy.
Justin's "Boredom" Music was a wacky good time (and I missed seeing
it cause I was backstage!)
and Sal's "Secondhand Smoke" as a deranged musical choice...
I'd love to see something from Greg or Amanda...
well, that's all my brain is good for at present.
Maybe when Urs puts the recenty lists up, something else will jog
my memory.

You can and did. and rightly so. Isn't it good we don't have to
footnote all the stories we tell?
Having heckled in person, I'll heckle long distance. :)
I think I would have been really entertained by the same material
if each class/discipline were performed by a different person. As
though they were all fighting for the control of your brain,
getting progressively feistier as the piece goes on...
Then at the end you could tell them they all got forgotten equally.
Then they might all skulk off sadly, or turn and kill you...
Easily amused,

From: Liveartslabco@aol.com

Just to remind all, there will be an open to the public reading
of the 6 winning plays for the Ten Minute Play Festival.
Please come to listen if you are interested in being considered
as a director for one of the plays--and maybe bring a resume?
We will also want to have as many actors there as possible to
fill in as readers--this is a great way to get a leg up on
auditions for the festival, which will be held later this month.
And, of course, we would like a lot of listeners too, there will
be short moderated discussion after each play and I am sure the
writers will be interested in the comments.
Tell everyone you know--
Live Arts Lab Space Open to the Public Reading Sunday the 13th.
Thanks

Subj: BoardRoom: Re-Run Amnesty Declared!!!!
From: labco@livearts.org
Time: Fri, 11-Jan-2002 21:18:45 GMT IP: 205.188.193.31
No, this is not a plug for a spin off from What's Happenin' Now,
but a declaration allowing amnesty for re-run no shame peices
between now and the first Friday of February.
Any piece you ever did from the beginning of No Shame back in
April of last year that you would like to do again is fair game
between now and February--EXCEPT:
1) pieces that were in Novemember's Best Of line up
2) that's it, only the first rule applies.
Now, that being said, NEW pieces are still very much encouraged,
of course, and will be given preference over re-run pieces when
we sit down to select the line up for the Best Of No Shame
performances on February 28th and March 1st.
Why are we doing this, you ask?
Well, Ursula and I were going through the archives last night
making a no shame log of dates people performed and we saw a
bunch of things we thought we'd like to see again...stuff that
got done on nights with pretty small audiences...and stuff that
we didn't see at all because we were off someplace doing other
important stuff.
So tell the kids, tell the police, tell everyone you know that
there is going to be lots of good stuff going on at no shame
this month--new works and slightly older new works.
If you think you might have missed something great, make a
request on the message board and maybe someone will dust off the
pages of that script for you--

I really enjoyed last night's No Shame.
In addition to good work by some of the usual suspects, I
appreciated Mr. Galbraith's appearances, the surprise introduction
of the Hammer Dulcimer in a door prize piece that was actually
sincere, and being made black.
I'd nominate Clinton's piece for Best Of, but then I've always
wanted a little more melanin (ok, maybe a lot more)...
I want to thank those who responded to The Bluebird. After a
couple more tweaks (tweets?) we'll put it in the archives for
anyone who wants to read it the old fashioned way.

If you were wondering, my full name is Katie Thompson (KT fer
short). I come from the mountainous cow-field regions of
Virginia know as Culpeper. I am a self-proclaimed intelligent
little child that attends high school, but not by choice. A am a
senior, struggling to graduate. Slowly, class by class, i am
getting kicked out of school. I am currently down to 5 classes.
I may or may not graduate. It all depends on if i keep my mouth
shut or not.
I have no buisness being at No Shame. My career as a thespian
ended in 10th grade at the wicked hand of Maggie Lawerence. Due
to severe mental break downs, I shall never be a true actor. So
in the mean time, I amuse myself by writing -&- playing Pokemon.
Pokemon is so addictive.....

P.S. I actually got the little piece alluding to Monty Python's

Ursula, I've no idea where last year's messages went. I suspect
that if anyone knows it's likely to be the invaluable Jeff Goode.
Perhaps when I was disposing of the rotting corpse of Last Year, I
got carried away. But whatever the case, I blame society.
Justin, I've mentioned the very foolish user interface thing
(pressing "next" to get to "previous") to Jeff, but he says it's
not customizable. sigh.
I'll have to go look at the order for Macabre Night at No Shame
again. It was really something...
KT, The Bluebird was written almost entirely by the woman who read
it- Allison Taylor. I added a tiny word here and there, and plan
to add many pictures, but the credit should be Allison's. I like
it alot!
Now I await the return of those slugs. Perhaps Greg has found a

volunteering for my piece last week, you both did an amazing job
with the cold read (it went much smoother than I was expecting).
In trying to remeber pieces to suggest for BestOf, I have much

all the skits I loved would jump back out at me.
Last, I am gathering material and information to start some

If you go to the Charlottesville home page (click the link at the
top of the board), you'll see a small link on the right that says
"Order for ...". Once you get there, it's actually all the orders
from the past No Shames.
