This is to nominate "Yamamoto's Decision" for Best of No Shame
since, apparently, no one else will. The National Press
Club "Record" termed the play "dynamic and exciting" and I'll
settle for that.

I LOVED every minute. Hope to return next week. I could not
control myself when the college girl said "Welcome to the

February 3, 2002
Dear NoShamers:
Even though I did it, it's difficult for me to nominate my own
play for Best of No Shame. Accordingly, I am taking the liberty
of attaching what dramaturgs, literary directors and others have
said about the play. Their kind remarks encourage me to believe
the play is worthy of production. The play, FYI, is under active
consideration for a production at several theatres in the U.S.
and England. Comments follow:
"Thank you for sending me your script. I liked it and we do
consider doing a reading sometime next year and perhaps produce
it at a later date. I feel very bad that it has not been done.
Congratulations to your success in winning the competitions!!!" -
- Dr. Doris Chu, Director, Asia on Stage, Boston
"We had over 50 entries from all over the US; many were agency
submissions. Your play was one of our four finalists. We would
like to hold on to your play with an eye toward possible
production...we like it, and want to keep it in mind as we plan
future sessions." --- Irene Ziegler, Literary Manager, Theatre
IV, Richmond, Va.
"A compelling subject with a literary fluency." -- Tisa Chang,
Artistic Producing Director, Pan Asian Repoertory Theatre, New
York
"Let me first congratulate you on a very accomplished draft. You
write with great economy, in a deceptively simple style that
makes the treatment of your subject truly intriguing and 'page
turning' for the reader." -- Peter Hinton, Resident Dramaturg,
Playwrights Workshop, Montreal, Canada (Yamamoto's Decision was
subsequently read at the Workshop)
"Your play is based on exciting historical facts and I enjoyed
reading it." -- Celise Kalke, Resident Dramaturg, Court Theatre,
University of Chicago
"I would love to see your script (Yamamoto's Decision) produced
here, but we just don't have the space or funds to undertake
your play as it should be done. But let's keep trying!!!" --
Brad Powell, Theatre Director, Hawaii Pacific University,
Honolulu
"Congratulations on the piece. It's very well done." -- Cleve
Lamison, Artistic Director, Blackbird Theatre Co., New York City.
"I wish the Rep could do this play. Well written." -- Barbara
Busy, Literary Manager, the Detroit Repoertory Theatre
"Your play sheds a new light on the history of a remarkable man
who had the bad luck of being a pragmatist in the midst of a
belligerent, imperialistic regime," Pier Carlo Talenti, Literary
Manager, Mark Taper Forum, Los Angeles
"Thank you for sending us the play, which has been recommended
for a further read within the department." -- Jo Ingham,
Literary Officer, Soho Theatre + Writers' Center, London, England
(10-1-01)
"The reading of 'Yamamoto's Decision' at Biff Malibu's on
Memorial Day weekend was another of those fleeting moments of
beauty that, I'm sorry to say, more people missed than enjoyed.
At the time, I had a feeling I was seeing history being made as
well as portrayed. ...In 'Yamamoto's Decision,' the notions of
duty vs. conscience play out on various levels among the
characters in a way that makes the play satisfying on both
dramatic and historical levels." -- Steve Thorpe, columnist,
Rapid City, S.D. Journal
"I went to see your reading on Dec. 7 (at the National Press
Club)and I was impressed. Especially, what you described an
aspect of humane and character of Admiral Yamamoto is wonderful.
For military people in Japan, they know his character. But many
of ordinary people don't know that even in Japan. I appreciate
to see a good play. Sincerely, Captain Toshiyuki Ito, Naval
Attache, Embassy of Japan, Washington, D.C.
"Behind-the-scenes maneuvering by the Japanese warlords and the
reluctance of the American-educated Yamamoto to undertake the
surprise raid (Pearl Harbor) add up to a dynamic and exciting
story." -- National Press Club "Record"
"Your play has made the finals of our annual playwriting
competition." -- Brian Feehan, Artistic Director Riverside
Stage, Wilton, Ct.
"I thought it was a lovely play! We'll see what the other
committee members think." -- Alice Timothy, Hudson River
Classics, Hudson, New York (Competition Finalist)

From: labco@livearts.org
Time: Wed, 13-Feb-2002 21:53:28 GMT IP: 152.163.207.193
Just so you know, the Greenskeeper ain't Live Arts
friendly...well they probably just ain't friendly period.
I went in with some 10 Min Play posters and asked if I could
leave a Live Arts poster.
A drunk man at the bar said, "NO."
I asked him if he was the manager. He said, "Yes, now get the
F@$K out of here."
The Employees behind the bar just giggled.
I thought the drunk man was putting me on, and the employees
were just doofuses, but as I repeated this story to other people
around town while putting up flyers I was told that yes indeed,
the manager there is a big jerk.
I used to like to go there.
Now I won't go there anymore and I encourage others to
vigorously patronize those establishements that DO cheerfully
put up arts flyers.
Like Rapture and Miller's for example. In fact, everytime you
see a 10 minute play festival poster or a No Shame poster on a
shop window, go in and buy something.
It may seem like a small, or off topic thing, but without the
reciprocating support of area business and arts patrons, there
just wouldn't be any any art establishments to do your art in.
If they know a large number of their customers are Live Arts
supporters, they are going to let us put up more posters, donate
goods and services for plays, and pay for advertising in
programs. If you something in a place with a flyer on the wall
for an arts event you support, thank them for supporting it too,
and the dividends will really grow for everyone.
It really does make a difference--shop the places that support
the arts, stay clear of the ones who tell the arts to get the
Fuck out. Take their advice, get the fuck out and stay the fuck
out, and tell everyone you know to do the same.

Excellent advice -- if they want to cater to drunken fraternity

Well, I'll certainly never give the Greenskeeper another thought.
Anyone who won't allow the new Best of No Shame Posters to be put
up is obviously a humorless cretin.
I'm sorry to be missing tonight's No Shame, but there is one thing
I want to mention:
Everyone should vote for the things they enjoyed most at No Shame.
This is a community event, and the more response and feedback, the
more representative the acts will be.
And that doesn't mean voting for yourselves either (although this
is NO Shame, so I can't rule such shamelessness out entirely).
Oh yeah, the 10 Minute Play Festival looks great.
I hope it's a big success.
Cheers,
Lee

The place sucks. I've lived here for four years, and it used to
suck a little bit less, but only because I don't have a TV set
and needed to watch all of the World Cup a few years ago, because
I really thought the US would win at least one game.
I really can't add so much to what has been said-- it's a fucking
shame that the idea of locality/community means nothing to the
bastards for whom the bottom line is drunk fratistas. It's a
shitehole through and through, and it's high time that
Charlottesville citizens did a better job of "voting with their
wallets," what have you. But that's the case everywhere.
So we'll spread the word. As a fan of getting drunk, there are
much better places to do it in. Like NoShame, to say the least.

As an underaged individual, the place should mean nothing
to me, but that isn't the case. Every so often, this wonderful
lil band called Bonepony plays there. Last time I went, it was
pretty nice. I just walked in, sat at a table -&- started writing
in my notebook. No one questioned me or made me pay to get in or
anything. I don't think anyone noticed me, actually. I'd
consider going back in there if I'm ever in one of those write
for a few hours moods again. It's relatively peaceful for a bar
-&- it's really nice to sit by the window so you can watch all the
people going by.
Moral: Go take advantage of their atmosphere (bathrooms,
free music, place to sit -&- write...), but don't give them a dime.

From: liveartslabco@aol.com

Ok, the committee has been slugging it out over the nominations
and suggestions and those who are in town and available and here
is what we have come up with.
Before I get to the list...remember that BEST OF NO SHAME is on
for Feb 28th and March 1st at 8:00
People in the show need to be available for both nights as well
as the rehearsal on the 27th.
Ok....here is the list, but not the order:
1) Unterman and Mignstu, Cognitive Dissonance Song
2) Westbrook, Time Served
3) Puberty Shriek the werewolf play, The Salt episode
4) Justin Wolf, Smoocher
5) Sean Nichtman, Angry Suburban Poet
6) Capron, Lady Blue Song (contact info?)
7) Todd Ristau, Abandon the Theatre for it is About to Burn
8) KT, Everybody's Screaming on this Winter Night
9) Clinton Johnston, Civics Lesson
10) Tucker Duncan, Belly Poem
11) Sherwood Ross, Nightmare Room Song
12) Lee Moyer, Daytrip to Guam
13) Clinton Johnston, Am I Black Enough
14) Todd Ristau, $80.00 a Week
15) Trent Westbrook, Lightning
Alternantes are being considered, but there isn't much time so
everyone who is listed here, please confirm that you can do all
three nights (rehearsal and two performances) ASAP either on the
message board or via email.)
Thanks to everyone, remember, this isn't the No Shame Oscars, its
a sampler plate chosen on the basis of getting a well rounded
evening of representative No Shames for people who haven't done
the regular Friday Night event--the idea is shameless
self-promotion and to get the No Shame community to grow by
exposing more people to it--so drag as many people to it as
possible.
If you came to the last one on Friday Night you know we turned
people away and oversold the house, so get people to come on
thursday, tell people to come early, and that it is general
seating so they can't come, buy a ticket, go eat pizza, and then
come back at 8:00 and expect to sit together or to have the best
seat in the house.
also, the standing lab rule is that no one, that is no one, gets
a seat without paying for it (except Ursula...but then she is
really paying for it in blood, sweat, and tears, isn't she?)so if
you want to watch you gotta pay too.
Thanks everyone for making no shame about the coolest thing in
Charlottesville.

:I can but hope that Greg will be in attendance...
:Anyone know?
Yes, I'm available, although the Wednesday rehearsal is a wee bit
problematic.
As an amusing aside, when Todd and Ursula were reading through the
list for me the other night I said in puzzled tones "'Daytrip to
Guam'??? I must not have been there for that one ..." To which
everyone chorused "But Greg ... you were IN it!"

I don't like it. Not just because after entering several items of personal data and getting my verfication email and clicking on the enclosed
link, I got this error message: "That is the wrong validation code for that user."

Well don't life just suck shit through a straw.
Several people who were confirmed have become last minute drop
outs.
My apologies. Nothing I can do about it, at this late stage of
the game. My real quandry is whether to have a different
program on thursday than on friday.
My personal feeling is that no, we should not have a different
program on thursday than on friday, especially since several of
the last minute drop outs were solid confirmed people two weeks
ago.
I'm deeply deeply disappointed that they dropped out, not only
because they had already confirmed, but that they waited until
this week to do so, which leaves us over a pretty crummy barrel.
If they had said no earlier, like before TUESDAY, it might have
been easier to get alternates, but there you go.
We're all in this barrel together and it will still be a strong
show, but I just don't think its fair to the audience or the
Best Of as a whole to let some people perform on Friday and not
Thursday....
So,
Here is the revised line up, but not in this order:
Please confirm ASAP--like tonight, since we open tomorrow.
JANE JONES as emcee
1) Nichtman, the Chicken you-know-what piece
2) Westbrook, Time Served
3) Puberty Shriek the werewolf play, The Salt episode
4) Justin Wolf, Smoocher
5) Sean Nichtman, Angry Suburban Poet
6) Capron, Lady Blue Song (contact info?)
7) Todd Ristau, Abandon the Theatre for it is About to Burn
8) KT, Everybody's Screaming on this Winter Night
9) Tucker Duncan, When I was a Shortie
10) Tucker Duncan, Belly Poem
11) Sherwood Ross, Nightmare Room Song
12) Lee Moyer, Daytrip to Guam
13) Lee Moyer, Bluebird of Poe
14) Todd Ristau, $80.00 a Week
15) Trent Westbrook, Lightning
Sorry I didn't have time to look up the actual titles, obviously
this is pretty last minute.
Extra sorry to lose the three pieces we did, and in the way that
we did, but I think it will still be a very strong show and I'm
looking forward to an equally strong turn out.
Be sure to come early, I still expect audiences to be as large
as last year's.

I'm so there Daddio!
Particularly looking forward to hearing the pieces I missed while I
was away.
:Be sure to come early, I still expect audiences to be as large
:as last year's.
Hear hear!
It should be amazing, though the absences will be keenly felt.
Especially pleased that Erin will be performing. :)
Always good to see new folks.
Cheers,
Lee

Ok,
New list:
It now seems possbile, though still a remote possibility that
Clinton will be involved somehow if the Dang old guy in the
Emerald City will release his clutch just a bit. Crossing
fingers and clicking red heels.
But for certain Jane will be fire breathing and possbily the
emcee.
1) (If possible)Clinton Johnston, Am I Black Enough?
2) Sal Milione, Instrumental
3) Nichtman, Angry Suburban Poet
4) Sherwood Ross, Nightmare Song
5) Justin Wolf, Smoocher
6) TG Westbrook, Time Served
7) Erin, Caffeine
8) Lee Moyer, Bluebird
9) Puberty Shriek, the salt episode
INTERMISSION
10) Todd Ristau $80 a week
11) KT, Everybody's Screaming on this Winter's Night
12) TG Westbrook, Lightning
13) Lee Moyer, Daytrip to Guam
14) Tucker Duncan, Belly Poem
15) Sean Nichtman, Discount Bob
16) Todd Ristau, Abandon the Theatre
So, its sort of going to be a surprise if we get Clinton, but
even though it won't seem like No Shame without him, we all have
to be supportive--and think of it as our own little contribution
to the success of the Wiz--which is, by the way, going to be
fantastic!
See you all tonight!
Todd
