Your syntax would seem to imply that Kyle's penis was a sketch
unto itself, Chris...
I'd say Aprille definitely had the most memorable piece of the
night. A lot of the pieces weren't written with Space Place in
mind, which only stands to reason. But overall, not a bad night.

I too very much enjoyed Aprille's
piece, and felt that many were
not written with Space/Place in mind, especially the VASTNESS
thereof.
I also thought Dan contributed a nice pair of monologues, and
especially enjoyed the first of the two poems--that being the
condom wrapper one.
James' piece was good, as always. Eloquent exposition of
similar experiences that I have had, nearly verbatim actually.

:
That is quite possibly the most horrifying possible question. I
can't begin to answer that, and I've seen less than a tenth of No
Shame's run.
With that in mind, the one No Shame piece that ever completely
reduced me to helpless side-clutching spot-seeing honest-to-God-
rolling-in-the-aisle laughter was the Sanford and Son parody from
the fall of 1991. That says a lot about me, or at least about me
in 1991. Of course, that's just humor. As far as poetry or serious
theater or surrealism or music or anything else, that's even more
completely meaningless...

As for the nudity...it was funny tonight. Next week, it won't be.

Okay, for my money, the best piece of all time might very well be
"Julio" by Scott Smith. If you saw Best of the Best of No Shame
Theatre two years ago, it was the one in which a 15 year-old
girl's mother is reading her diary in which she details her love
for Julio, a 30 year-old drug dealer/Satanist. It's a musical
piece, and the performance I saw was positively tight, not to
mention hilarious.
Of course, my favorite piece (but certainly not the best) was the
one my freshman year when I told everyone my grandfather had died
of a heart attack and I blamed myself, and the whole thing was
working up to one stupid joke at the end, but halfway through I
noticed some people were crying and I realized that the audience
was buying it. I condemned myself to hell that night.

A good show, if more inconsistent than last week's. There were
some pacing problems during the first half, but that took care of
itself.
And I have to give kudos again to James Horak for the nerd song.

I agree. But let's get specifical, shall we?
1) I always dig Chris and Adam onstage together, and I think this
piece was particularly well-constructed. It didn't have the sort
of bang/flash style that works best at the top of the show, but
that's a problem of the fool who did the order. A very, very
well-crafted piece, and well-executed to boot.
2) Nice. In my opinion, the search and seizure demonstration is
hilarious to the point of having value beyond that of several
human lives. Bee-utiful.
3) The grotesquerie of the sock was, well, grotesque. Truthfully,
that image is stuck in my mind to the point where I don't remember
much of the piece. It was a sock, right?
4) I have mixed opinions about this one. Memorization is always a
big plus, and it was well paced. On the other hand, jock strap. I
can't figure it out. Bare ass, no reason. Shudder, you know?
5) "Maybe I'm a lesbian." Pause. Pause. Pause. "Nah." Gorgeous.
6) Excellent, excellent work. I think the reading aloud of the
cards contributed a lot, even if it was unplanned. Maybe a touch
long, but otherwise flawless. I really dig this piece.
8) Big acting tour de force for Kyle, and more power to him for
pulling off a serious piece when No Shame is getting extremely
comedy-heavy. Don't get me wrong; I love comedy. It just seems
that we're getting maybe one serious piece every two weeks, and
that's a ratio I wouldn't mind seeing tweaked a little. So
everybody get in touch with your pain. Yeah.
9) Also great. It ran a little long, but the whole thing was very
enjoyable. Senor Horak must have had an extra bowl of Wheaties
this week.
10) Okay, it's hard for me to critique scenes I'm in, but I think
this one could have done with a little editing. It was
fundamentally strong, and it had some good lines, but the bluster
factor was a little high. Half as long and I think it would have
clicked quite nicely. But overall, an impressive effort for a new
performer/writer.
11) James has been watchin' them films again. I really like this
piece, partially because I'm always one for the mildly political
No Shame, but mostly because it takes a big risk. This is an
excellent example of James trusting the audience to stay with him
and being right. Hoo. Ray.
12) I may go back and forth on his pieces, but I like the role
Chris plays in the No Shame ecosystem. He keeps things honest, in
a way. Mostly, though, I like Chris best when he's doing something
he doesn't normally do, like this. As always, a solid performance,
but as not always, a mild departure.
13) The sign flip made this.
15) The line "Tough shit!" screamed from offstage made this.

Of course we have a student government. They're that big evil
organization that No Shame is not affiliated with.
Of course, if a bunch of the fold were to capture student

say that No Shame would not be above taking a few kickbacks.

anyway, i'm terribly sorry to have missed last week's show, especially with what i heard about

wasn't there. bother bother bother.
so anyway...if no shame types were to infiltrate student government, what effect would that have?
does no shame have any desire to be affiliated with student gov? would it mean restrictions along

No Shame flatly does not want to be affiliated with Student
Government, ever. There are no benefits to it that we couldn't get
from the Theater Department. I speak as a person who has had
intimate dealings with Student Government and bent their
bureaucratic rules so far back that they could smell their own
butts. Assuming rules have butts. And that these hypothetical
butts don't really smell that bad, so you'd have to be really

From: fanky@avalon.net (Count Von Mitchell)
Time: Sat, 13-Feb-1999 20:23:23 GMT IP: 206.150.147.116
My top-o-head impressions for the show:
First the positive, of which there was a good bit -
Mike R.'s "serious" piece kicked some serious booty, and it's not
often you'll find me ever saying something good about a serious
piece, so ya know it had to rawk. Even though it was just a
straight up, letter-type monologue, the way it was written and
the way he performed it kept your attention, and it wasn't
horrifically long (like most serious pieces, esp valentine's day
serious pieces tend to be). Ver y nice!
And on another Mike rawks note, the dance he did for Aprille's
piece was a hoot and a half. Nothing like stroking yourself on
the dance floor of One Eyed Jake's.
Chris O.'s song was intensely cool. The man can really sing, and
writes one hell of a chorus. Good to have a piano song too, not
very often seen at NS.
Jamal n Chris's first piece was a goodie - bizarre, well acted,
funny, not too gross to enjoy or pointlessly gross, and far from
lengthy. Reminded me very slightly of the "Grandpa's Butt" piece
(You tricked me.....again!), which is one of my faves of all
time.
Aprille's piece was quite cool. Monologues are always better
when properly spiced up, as this was with Mike n Bob. And though
it wasn't memorized, it was read without a single stutter, making
it clear that she had either rehearsed it or is such a wondrous
speaker that there was never reason to give pause. I dig.
339-1956? ;)
I also quite enjoyed the Three Guys a Hecklin' piece. Mike's
monologue wasn't half bad either, but the three guys were clearly
the most comedic element of this one. Twat Cheese.
The "watching a porno" piece was really quite good, but a bit too
long. The people in the background were an absolute hoot -
"You're gonna what?" was probably gets the line of the evening
award, coming to us from Sarah G. Brad's "enjoying a good porno"
look on his face was also quite priceless.
As for the negatives, well, it was rather a "general" issue
rather than specific, but the evening was quite long. Mostly
because almost all of the pieces were just much too lengthy -this
particular No Shame was probably the worst example of people not
obeying the 5 minute limit I've ever seen. There were a lot of
pieces that could have been quite good if they hadn't stretched
for so long. A couple of specifically bad things I'll note:
Chris n Jamal's 2nd piece was probably the worst one they've
done. It had its moments, but it was gross without being funny,
too long, too pointless and just basically a catalogue of why
their detractors don't like their pieces without including many
of the elements of why fans (like me) dig them so.
I really did not dig that video thing either; it's good to try to
expand the bounds of the medium, but ack. Not only did I think
that was a poor idea and as close as you can get to not being
acceptable No Shame material (pre-recorded video??), but frankly
the video just wasn't that good. I'm only going to harp on it
this intensely because well, they made all of us get up front and
watch it on that tiny little TV, must've thought it was a
masterpiece. And well, tune in to PATV any ol' night and you'll
see funnier stuff. Hell, I've seen 5th grade videos that were
cooler, sorry to say. At least it did have Beastie Boys'
Sabotage, which rocketh.
Okay. Since I've taken up most of the alotted space on whatever
machine is housing this chat room I'll shaddap now.
As a whole, show with lotsa good pieces that unfortunately
dragged due to the length and frequency of the bad.

You know, there was a point last night when I envied Dan for
getting his teeth pulled yesterday, because he didn't have to
sit through the show last night...
The most mentally draining night of No Shame I've ever
witnessed. Half the pieces seemed like they went 10 minutes and
the audience was just lost by the end of the show. We have to
pick up the pacing next week, and for Pete's sake people EDIT
YOUR MATERIAL!!! We don't need to see 10 minutes of something to
know if it's good or not. Not everyone is guilty of this of
course, but I think certain people need to be reminded of one of
the rules of No Shame: Pieces must be under 5 minutes.
One more week in Space Place then it's home, and none too soon.
Thoughts anyone?

My name's Bob and I'm one of the no-shamers running for student

the moment and so I've stopped by here. I never even thought
about linking NoShame to student gov in any way until I saw this
series of posts. Now if we eight manage to overthrow student gov
and kill off all the other members, there could be some anonymous
checks to noshame issued. That is purely hypothetical. I

my favorites of the night-
aprilles piece was very good, not only hilarious but interesting.
i thought the rubber glove guy didnt quite get the reaction he
deserved. i believe he followed directly after the video story
time, which was fairly entertaining, but didnt exactly fit the no
shame atmosphere, and thus, killed the audience a tad. i liked
chris and jamals first one, but nonetheless they had sort of an
off night, i am confident theyll bounce back next week. some good
serious stuff was done last night. bob?'s piece was good. the
innocent/honest quality carried it. maybe it will move me to
share my inner thoughts and emotions on stage in the future. then
again that would probably break the damaging the space and
occupants rule. i enjoyed chris o.'s song and sarah g.'s song
very much. gregs piece also split my sides. i loved the
nonsensical quality of it.

Without addressing the first half of this note, since I find that
having comprehensible thoughts is usually a plus...
"You guys are gonna loose your audience..." is a point people can
address. You didn't like the show?? WRITE SOMETHING!!!!
Seriously! New blood is always good; if you think that No Shame
has a set of "players", that's a misconception. Anyone can submit
a piece, so don't refer to No Shame as "you guys". You're a part
of No Shame for having gone to it - best way to make it better is
to take matters into your own hands. No shame isn't "run" by
anyone, it's a big time "by the people for the people" show.
There are regulars, but anyone can perform, and new blood is
always cool.

This show hurt a lot. I think it all started with the
weather...many folks weighed staying in to avoid the 30 below
wind chill over going to no shame. The second problem was
energy...I personally believe it all started with the announcing.
This part is very important. Our openers need to equally have a
ton of energy.
The audience needs to feel excited to be there. Please please
use the same formula of enthusiasm that we usually have in the
past.
Also, Bill Bunderoth's singing blew me away.

Schoolgirl-Jesus-loving one. I thought that was great and I've
liked her performances since. Why is that girl single?! tsk, tsk
(directed towards all you silly boys out there for not asking her
out).
Regarding the other pieces...
I thought there were some good pieces scattered in the *WAY* too
long evening. Chris's song was great, and he did a good job of
trying to overcome the sound-gobbling cave which is Space Place.
The entire idea of a video was interesting, but really didn't work
at all in this type of setting. Having everyone squish around a
tiny tv is not a good way to get across your piece.
I loved Mike's rubberglove boy piece! The audience seemed unsure
how to react at first, and I'm impressed he stuck with it to the
end without getting intimidated.
Regarding my piece being cute because I did it...

1) How much of the show is done each week by the "core group"?
Is there a core group of audience members, too? How much of the
audience is usually made up of other theatre majors?
2) What does a performer get out of this type of performance?
How does it compare with, say, playing a spear carrier in an
opera at Hancher or playing Iago at E.C. Mabie?
3) Has anybody ever taken anything developed at NST into a wider
venue?
4) Does anybody want to tell me about spectacular failures or
successes?
5) How much do you pay to use Space Place? How much for Theatre
B.?
Anything else you want to contribute will be welcome. I expect
to have more questions after I see another show or two.
Thanks

:Hi. My name is Steve Rosse and I'm writing an article on No
:Shame for "Spectator", a publication of the U of I Office of
:Public Relations. I would like to ask if I can join you next
:Friday after the show (I was too shy to just jump in at the
:Village Inn last Friday) to ask some questions. If you would
:rather contribute by e-mail, I'd be glad to have it, as long as
:you understand that whatever you send may be used as a quote in
:the article.
I dare say we'd be glad to announce this at the beginning of next
week's show. However, I'd be iffy about doing it at a post-show
shindig, because by no means all No Shamers hang out any one place
after the show and I'd hate to exclude anyone. But we'll be more
than glad to put people who haven't seen your post in touch with
you on this.

You know, I think the only thing that took longer than James
posting the order for 2/12 was the 2/12 show itself...I'm just
pulling your leg James...you didn't take that long.

Ah to be lonely and bitter. I remember those days like they were
yesterday. Because they were yesterday, and the day before, and
every other day in my life.

No Speaking by Sarah Greer
I, for my part, thought it was a great evening. I had perhaps
the best time of my brief NS career singing Greg's song. Really
fun. And I thought Dan's piece was painfully brutal, in a good
way. And I really like the Sarah "Break-a My Heart" Greer mime
thing. And nearly everything was MUCH shorter than last week,
and consequently MUCH better, and everything that was less than
spectacular would have benefited from some judicious editing.
And seeing Megan "Goddess" Gogerty, and hearing her dead-on
fantastic-ness. Way cool. Way.
A good send off for Space Place. No Shame. The beat goes on.

I thought this was one of the better examples of why No Shame
rocks. It perhaps could have used a moment or two more of
seriousness and drama, but that's a nitpick. Chris and Jamal were
sadly showcasing why their critics dislike them most of the
evening, though I thought one of their pieces was pretty solid.
On to the specifics...
Megan's piece was a hoot, even though she had to restart once.
The rhymes in the initial song were absolutely priceless.
It was also great to have an appearance from Bradley Harris doing
some juggling type things - always a plus to the night in my book.
I thought all the songs were great this evening. Chris's "I Miss
You" once again had a terrific catchy tune as well as a solid
chorus. Kyle's guitar skill and singing voice are fantastic, and
his somber song was definitely a nice addition to an evening chock
full of comedic material, since it was so well done. Aaron
Galbraith and James Horak definitely had a great short piece in
the poem with guitar bit - NICE execution made this work quite
well. And for the song that Chris, Kyle and I did - I had an
absolute blast doing that one too, and thank both Chris and Kyle
for helping me out! That was probably about as much fun as I've
had performing a skit in quite some time (though I greedily admit
that playing the Commander last week was a hoot and a half).
The two pieces this week by the guy/guys who did the video
presentation last week were fantastic. I don't have his name down
yet, but the guy who plays the fan of M.S. Masterson really has a
hell of a character. And that "bad guitarist" bit was a killer -
was that ad-libbed?? It was ludicrous, I loved it.
Chris and Adam's Boom Shaka was slightly formulaic, but a definite
winner. The energy they put on when doing the Boom Shaka dance
was quite impressive, helping to compliment the witty script.
Oh, and before I forget - duh! Sarah Greer's piece was one of my
favorite No Shame pieces I've seen in the past couple of years.
This was _good_ stuff, definite vote for Best Of if you ask me.
The moment when the guy slipped while exiting was magical.
Excellently timed, brilliantly conceived as a whole, BIG thumbs
up.
I also thought that Mark Hansen and Brad Smith produced some
classy moments during A Pit Stop sketch. These two have a really
great chemistry, and I love pointless, weird sketches like this.
On the slight downside of things (though nothing was really even
"bad" on the whole...) I couldn't hear much of what Jim Wolf was
saying, though what I did hear intrigued me quite a bit. Space
Place's acoustics dwarfed what he was saying, alas. And as I
previously mentioned, Chris and Jamal were not up to par for
themselves this particular evening. I thought that the Vaudeville
sketch was quite excellent, but the others they did were not the
gems we've seen them do before.

Hey, cool! I just found out this thing exsisted! Whoah, man.
I"m way late in posting, but since officially this week's NST
hasn't started yet, I'm still good for commenting on last week's
show, yes?
Naw, forget it. I'm too tired. Kyle's, Danger's, and Chris O.'s
were my favorites of the evening. My two regrets: 1) Where are
all the women? Me and Sarah, and a couple performers I didn't
know, and that's it. Not cool. 2) Chris S. and Jamal are so
obviously talented, interesting exciting performers who know
exactly what they're doing and are capable of blowing our minds (I
saw one NST last October where Jamal did that very thing). So why
did they persist on doing boring, unfunny material? There has to
be a reason. Someone suggested they're trying to get boo'd off
stage. Is it some weird Andy Kaufmann-esque masochism? I don't
get it. Hey, I enjoy a good poop joke, don't get me wrong. But
the key words there are "good" and "joke". It's so obvious these
guys are really skilled and gifted. I wasn't even offended,
necessarily. Or if I was, it was because I was being forced to
watch boring masterbatory sketches, whose point I was missing
completely. Maybe I'm out of touch, here. Somebody please clue me
in. Thank you. I shall now sink back into oblivion.
Oh, except one other comment. Where did all these cute boys come
from? So cute. So many. So getting married in June. So
disappointed.

Shame was, and i assumed ic, but i guess i'm not sure about that.

it done not be nowhere? I crap my eyes shut, or it not be posted?
Crap.
What a night! I enjoyed many of the shows. The biggest
disappointment was that Brad the juggler showed up but didn't put
on a show. I like jugglers! My favorite part was the improv, and
also the Dan-is-in-love skit. Funny! Touching! Lots of other
stuff I liked but I can't remember cause order not posted! Huh!
It's good to be back in the real theatre!
I love you all!

Hello, this is Mark Hansen, a performer at No Shame Theatre. If you don't remember me, I'm the
"funny" one. I was just wondering if anyone paying attention to me has seen No Shame outside of
Iowa City (i.e. Chicago, New York City, Cleveland, wherever, take your pick) And, how did it
differ from Iowa City's? Huh?
