okay, I got something for y'all, but it might a teensy bit scary.
I was in an anthropology class last term and we were assigned to
do a study of some community. Guess who we picked? Well we've
got a web page up, and if you want to look around, I put the
adress at the bottom.

NOTE: The opinions of my colleges do not necessarily represent my
own. (translation: Don't hate me, because of them, hate me
because of me.

Okay, here you go...

I thought this show was a great way to kick off No Shame's
return to Theater B. The variety of the show was a nice touch.
I agree that the first piece was salvageable, but other than that
I have no complaints. I particularly liked Ben Schmidt's piece.
There was a personal interest in it for me because I keep
thinking about transferring to an Art School and drinking lots of
funny named exotic coffees. But then I would miss No Shame, so
forget it. Aprille's piece was unexpected (I was waiting for
more Gaydar glitches), and I liked that. Kyle's Medical Records
piece was nicely done. The squeaky wheels were genius.

All in all I thought it was an exceptional evening. We had
songs, drama, comedy, dance, improv, and small children. Whew!
No wonder it was 21 pieces. I'm glad the message of shorter
pieces got across to everyone. The only one I squirmed through
was the first one, but that was mostly because of the pitchfork.

who on earth is Alyssa Bowman? why won't she show herself?
this is beginning to upset me almost as much as the Jamal River

First of all, take a deep breath.... now let it out.... good. I believe Alyssa Bowman is the female
seen with Mose, Chris and Jamal. The other night I was introduced to her as, "Alyssa," and
considering pieces written by Alyssa Bowman are performed by Mose or Jamal or Chris, I just put
two and two together. I could be wrong, I'm a theater/english major, I don't know math. So,
responding to your second question, she's probably just shy. That's my theory, but believe
whatever you want.

not, no dice....

Cradle of Filth? I thought that was my bedroom

Improv at No Shame...is it working?

No Walt Stein??? Tears are shed

I;ll be back with a vengance next show...two pieces, that is if
there's any room left after JamalChris get through with the order

Yeay! I am on a No Shame website thing! I was here once before
but this is my very 1st time posting a message!

This website is a lot of fun, huh?! My favorite part is when
somebody decides to type my name into their message! Like,
"Jamal River is my favorite performer!" or "I really liked
everything about Jamal's piece and everything he's done ever!"

I also like it when I see that somebody typed Mose's name! I
know Mose! He is my friend! Hi, Mose!

And I like the part with Alyssa's name, even though it was about
how nobody knows who she is! She is my friend, too!

And the parts with Chris' (he is my friend) name!

I recognize some other people's names, too, and that is also fun
for me! Yay for acquaintances!

I thought all the pieces on Friday were really good!, except
there were several I did not care for at all! Make sure those
aren't in the next show, OK!?

A suggestion for this website is to make a way for me to delete
messages that I don't like, or to change them so they're better!
I also wouldn't mind seeing my name ("Jamal River") a little
more often!

See you at the show, everybody!

Bye!

Jamal! River!

Yes, indeedy, as Mose said, Iowa City is the original No Shame Theatre. Most of the other No

:I was just wondering if anyone [] has seen No Shame outside of Iowa City (i.e. Chicago, New
York City, Cleveland, wherever, take your pick) And, how did it differ from Iowa City's? Huh?
:

I've seen No Shame in Chicago. It was a small space (maybe 30-40 people tops, and the stage
was about 10 or 15 feet wide) It was a small room in the back of a bar.

In general, from what I've heard, I think No Shame in other cities usually differs mainly in that it
tends to be influenced by the kind of theatre that goes on in that community.

I am told that No Shame in New York, for example had more frequent gratuitous nudity because
at the time, that's what folks in NY thought of as artsy.

I only have a minute (I'm at work), but I wanted to say that
Clare Gerstein's song (about the goth girls) was wonderful! She
has a good voice and plays guitar well (she beats the pants off
of me, I can only play the kazoo). The only problem was the lack
of volume, but it was her first time singing and everyone was
quietly paying attention, so the volume was really a big deal.
This song really struck home because, yes, those 15-year old
girls with died black hair who hang out at the mall and shop at
Hot Topic and listen to Marylin Manson and Cradle of Filth really
are much cooler than me, and that's something I'll have to live
with for the rest of my life. *sniff*

Bob, you're cooler than any goth-girl I know...

(I liked the song too, BTW, and, just to be trendy, I'd like to
mention Jamal and Mose's names because I think they are so cool!
Go Jamal!! Go Mose!! ;) I enjoyed their respective pieces very
much as well, and particularly enjoyed Chris Stengl's piece,
though I found it unfortunate that it was placed in a night of
somewhat obvious misogyny (is it really funny to whip women while
on their knees, even in an improv??), and was misunderstood by
some to be a little harsh, when it was pretty evenly
balanced--cruely objectifying both men and women, in that
self-centered character he plays so well. Really good stuff, and
Jamal was a good sport as always. (See, Jamal, that's THREE
mentions in one post...)

As always, I thought Dan did a nice job, and it's always a treat
to see Kim Benesh on any stage, but especially No Shame.
Aprille's piece's just keep getting better, and, though I would
hardly burden her with the duty, her plea for more
estrogen-influenced work hopefully did not fall on deaf ears.
There was a time in the not-so-distant past when No Shame wasn't
such a testosterone-a-thon. Not that I give any hormone
preference, but a balance is always a good thing. Hell, I'd even
settle for some good, old fashioned lesbian love poetry. ;)

As for my piece--Mose kindly told me he didn't get it, that I lost
him somewhere in the middle. Was this a universal experience? In
any case, I at least apologise to Mose. I'll try to be tighter in
the future.

One more word, although it probably doen't need mentioning. Check
tech BEFORE the show. ;) Having read the piece that was sadly
pre-empted due to lack of power, we all missed out from a lack of
fore-sight. Maybe this week?? (PS--turns out, one of the
backstage plugs is always on--Just ask James or Dan to let you
know which.) Enough babble for now.

...and it was...GOOD!!

Not great by all means, but it was solid, considering the number
of pieces featuring Board members was 0. We filled the order,
and that scares me.

Good stuff:
-Jamal/Chris did a few sketches...and not ONE poop joke. Very
impressive boys. The song was also good.
-Al's MSM (plus Forsytheian anictode) was a scream, though a bit
on the long side.
-Lots of great songs in general! And a Mondo's reference
-the line in Mark's peice "the bluntness of a frank, or the
frankness of a blunt" Damn. And I'm directing his play.
-Khery's mono was excellent. it's nice to see genuine emotion at
No Shame. A bit long, but a great risk.
-there was a lot of other good stuff that I can't remember

Bad:

-That dog sketch...I mean, parodying "Closer" was a good
idea...but it's been done, at No Shame. And after a while, you
just can't look at Al trying to lick his ass
-OK, I like the idea of improv at No Shame, but what they did
wasn't so much improv, it was "read funny lines". I would have
like to have seen what they could have done if they had read
less lines and let the perfs go longer with the lines they
had...i mean, there are some funny MFs in that troupe and they
can do better.
-this asshole sitting behind me who made unfunny little comments
during ever sketch

anyone else have any thoughts?
