The only real impediment to there being a summer noshame is trhat no one has done anything
about it. I think one of the board members should get on it, since they supposedly know more
about how the whole space issue works. Otherwise, I'll just have to do it myself. And you don't
even know who I am, so what reason do you have to trust me, huh? -Secretively yours,

:I had previously convinced myself that what makes a movie good
:is the acting and the script and the music and the effects and
:the editing
Which doesn't do shit for movies with no acting (even
though you will see fewer films more moving than "Stop Making
Sense," which is a Talking Heads concert film, and hasn't any
acting proper), scripts (though John Cassavettes' "Shadows" is
improvised... and breathtaking), music (Tod Browning's "Dracula"
has, variously, no music and hideous music, and is beautiful) or
effects ("Psycho" is the best thing ever produced in Hollywood,
but the special effects are silly).
Nor does your thesis account for the astonishing-ness of
"Gumby: The Movie," Art Clokey's 1995 masterpiece, in which the
"acting" is stilted to nonexant, the script is ripe with lines
like "I found a robot that makes soup!" and the music is ghastly,
though the packaged whole is the GREATEST FILM OF THE LAST TEN
YEARS.
:I believed that a movie could not be better simply because a
:particular actor is really fucking hot.
I work at a store that sells pornography. The "movies"
there are improvements on one another based ONLY and ENTIRELY on
how hot the actors are.
:Tom Cruise has changed my mind.
Tom Cruise's teeth are scary, and his eyes are too close
together, and his eyebrow is gross. In addition, his forehead
vein pops out also grossly when he is Emoting. It is a science
fact that Tom Cruise is actually weird or ugly looking.

I've actually gained a lot of respect for Tom Cruise, since his
stints in Eyes Wide Shut and Magnolia. Yeah, he was pretty much
playing one note, but he did it well, and I enjoyed it.
Now, Nic Cage...there's an actor who deserves to be dumped into
the North Sea. His idea of "acting" is to tug at his forehead and
move his hands quickly. After winning an Oscar he hasn't done one
role that offered more of a challenge than not being shot by a
stunt pistol or falling off a cliff or being run over. So he's
basically a stand in for a stunt man, which is more than I can
say for Mr. Cruise. Though I have yet to see MI 2.
ps. For all you John Woo fans out there, rent Hard Boiled or the
Killer. Two of the best action films I've ever seen. And I've
seen a lot.

I do, now, remember the scene where Tom Cruise said, "I am now
the last of the Mohicans," but, to be honest, at the time I
didn't associate it with the movie or the book.
And, now that I have associated the two, I'm still not sure
you've got a valid point there, Egg. I think you might be
overanalyzing things just a wee bit. For instance when, at the
end of "Mrs. Doubtfire," Robin Williams says to the camera, "Well
this surely has been The Odyssey by Homer," you have to realize
that it's just a figure of speech, much like you or I might say,
"Man, that baby sure went flying," when what we mean is that
we've just thrown a baby at a pregnant teenager. Robin Williams
wasn't wrong for saying that. Nor was Tom Cruise, nor were you,
Adam Hahn wrong, when you, Adam Hahn, threw that baby at that
teenage mother to be. Now, it wasn't me who threw it, I swear to
God, but, were i the one to have thrown it, neither would I be
wrong.
And furthermore, I hate Americans!
Which brings me to my point! Why is it so difficult to find
good fast food in this town? I mean, come on!

MALKMUS HANDSOM HANSEN SAYS:
:Please see Raising Arizona and/or Valley Girl
CHECK OUT WHAT I SAY:
1) N. Cage has intentionally been taking roles in action pictures
instead of goofy, unpopular comedies, his explanation being that
he wants his work to reach a wider audience. Which is
understandable if dubious.
2) N. Cage has been turning in acceptable-to-admirable
performances in these action films, though the films themselves
have been abysmal ("ConAir") to fun (duh, "Face/Off").
3) Yes, Mark, "Raising Arizona" is the best movie featuring the
talents of N. Cage, but for my N. Cage dollar (which is
startlingly similar to a regular G. Washington dollar) is a toss-
up between "Vampire's Kiss," in which N. Cage eats a real
cucaracha and does a transcendent two-hour freak-out, and "Peggy
Sue Got Married," in which N. Cage intentionally imitates the
voice Art Clokey uses for Pokey, the orange clay pony of "Gumby
Adventures" fame.
4) God smiles on anyone drawing on Pokey as inspiration for
performance in a Coppola movie.

I'm more digusted with Mr. Cage's choice of films than his
acting, because the films he's been doing for the past few years
don't allow him to take the kinds of acting risks an actor of his
status could/should be taking. I feel the same about Harrison
Ford, who won't take small but meaty and challenging roles in
ensemble films (ie Cruise in Magnolia), instead appearing in
poorly written, ill concieved star vehicles (ie 6 Days 7 Nights,
Random Hearts etc).
see you all Friday
