Old Brick is right out because of No Shame's long-standing alliance with Satan.
As for the Ballrooms, rent there is surprisingly pricey, and I believe we've
missed the deadline for reserving the space. MacBride is a definite
possibility, but the lighting in there is tricky, as is the logistics of
getting them to open the place up at 11pm. Plus, and this is purely a personal
bias, the room sucks.
Keeping it in the theatre building would be a definite plus, in my opinion,
just because it's easier to put a sign on the lobby doors and send people to
room 172 than it is to direct them all over campus. Outdoors, while it would be
a mighty fine nostalgia piece, is pretty risky in February.
Wheelroom isn't a bad idea, but I'm not sure if we can charge admission. Plus,
the content of No Shame (or rather the lack of any specified content in
advance) might be hard to get past the Union Programming Board.
Thoughts.

I thought the reason for charging admission was to pay for the space. No
charge for the space = no charge to the audience. Am I right or am I missing
something here?

I guess I'm the one who has to suggest the obvious, but: the Iowa River ?
Submerged? Check out how totally cool that would be, to shame underwater. If
not, I say it's high time to bring back the glory days of the back of a pickup,
screw the cold weather. Also: Donde esta el bano?
Oh yeah! Check this out! If there is no No Shame for three weeks, that's
just about a hundred more young people that will be drinking away their Friday
nights. I happen to know that the University is just itching for ways to pour
money into alcohol free alternatives, and would think this could be a good
trend to latch onto.
I was talking to this guy a couple weeks ago, and he was like, your cambus

you guys actually *write* those things? Shit man, I'm holding a fucking piece

Maybe someone could hit up the really low-fi intermedia performance space.
Again, no lighting (unless you bring your own special efx) to speak of other
than on/off fluorescents. Same goes for any space at Halsey Hall. Count
North-Hall/Space Place out, unless you manage to swing a good deal with Gary
Holmquist (a nice guy, if you get the chance to meet him). Gary's careful about
the space and the Dance Department has their head's up their asses for the most
part (They call this posturing 'Modern Dance'). There's also Shambaugh, but i
don't know the specifics on getting that one. And last, but not least, there's
the 24-7 super-HyVee deli. The seating's already built in with quaint little
tables; and refreshments are always nearby!!

I know for lighting that you might be able to rent some for not too much...and
if you get a free space, then the lighting would be covered by
attendance...West Side Players has two light tree's and a small light board
that they do rent out to people....it's another thought.

Actually, No Shame in the Wheelroom for a few weeks might be really
interesting -- probably wouldn't be able to seal the place off or charge
admission, but as Thufir points out, you wouldn't have to pay for the space
either. And it would certainly boost No Shame awareness.

Did you know that alcohol can
a) Cause liver, kidney and brain damage?
b) Impede your ability to drive a car, operate machinery or enjoy the
theatre?
c) Cure such maladies as depression, insomnia, ambition and marriage?
For more facts on alcohol, contact your pastor, parents or guidance conselor.
Until then, come to No Shame sober, goddammit!

a) I used to know this
b) I don't drive or operate machinery while watching the theatre. And many of

c) Didn't know this. Maybe thats why I sleep well, don't get depressed, and

my grandfather, who was a bartender up until the age of 85, always said
"there's no such thing as a mean drunk, just mean people." i think this is
true, and you can substitute almost any adjective for "mean."
most people can drink and still know how to behave. others, who have bad
behavioral tendencies to begin with, will become even more
obnoxious/disrespectful/pukeful when drunk.
it's easy to blame people's bad behavior on liquor, though not really accurate,
i think. the greek system is an example (except josh rubin, of course, who is
the friendly neighborhood exception to all bad things said about the greek
system).

Okay, so, without diminishing the value of the current discussion, here's the
deal:
No Shame will indeed be in Space Place for the first four (count 'em, four!)
weeks of the spring season. Space Place is on the first floor of North Hall;
it's sort of a funky converted gymnasium with bleacher seating and a floor that
costs six million skillion dollars. Admission will still be one dollar, and
judging by the layout of North Hall will probably be taking pieces outside the
auditorium.
Note for performers: I'm not kidding about the floor thing. It's the dance
department's baby, and if we scratch it or breathe on it wrong the crows will
pick cockroaches from our bleached skulls. So odds are we're going to be asking
performers to remove their shoes. If this ruins your plan for a clogging piece,
I'm sorry.

I kind of liked Space Place. Shakes up the status quo. And I've always wanted
to perform there. :) (It's usually a dance venue for them's what don't know
that already; but I am hardly a trained dancer.)

Acoustics bad, though. We should see about maybe getting a curtain lowered or
something so the cavernous backstage doesn't eat up all the sound.
That space really affected the mood of the evening. I mean, No Shame's usual
sense of humor plays one way in front of a curtain under bright lighting. It
plays another way under dim lighting when the performers are tiny dots
skittering around in a vast dark cave.
That having been said, the fare wasn't bad. But it certainly wasn't
spectacular, either...

I thought the juggler, although a little rough, was not bad and a nice change
of pace from what seems to be turning into roughly similar comedy sketches each
week. But then I always go for the juggler.
No doubt that Kyle's performance was the most memorable part of the evening.
However, I was flipping thru the news channels Monday night and caught the butt
end (so to speak) of a story on nudity in a performance at the university that
was causing a stir. I missed the beginning when they said what is was (the
strip-tease show at the union Saturday) and although I didn't *think* it was No
Shame, I did have to check the paper today. . .
And I would like to repeat what I told Kyle at The Mill afterwards: at least
everyone applauded and no one pointed and laughed.
(there's a reason I've never appeared _sans_ clothing on the No Shame stage)

Perhaps a good time to review the nuditiy laws--Anyone can be naked in a
"artistic performance," with the condition that the male not be...um...aroused
visably. This was the problem with the dancers at the Wheelroom. So, have at
it, just lay off the Viagra...

I caught the story of the Male revuew dancers in a state paper in Arkansas.
Any chance (or whispers) of repercussions for No Shame?
Hope not.

One of the ever-true though rarely stated (since it's obvious) rules of No
Shame has always been "keep it legal." Thus far nude performers have managed
to keep their arousal in check, and as long as they continue to do so, no
clothes at No Shame is no problem.

Hey--has anyone reached out to the dance dept? It seems like since NS is in
Space Place, there might be a good chance of getting some dancers to perform,
and maybe getting them hooked. Any dance contacts out there?

That's a darned fine idea. Which is to say, we haven't touched it. When I
think of No Shamers and dance, I think of Patrick Deegan. And so I look
pointedly (in a text-based sort fo way) athim.

The idea of getting other departments involved is great. The more different
things that appear on the No Shame stage, the more people seem willing to
stretch their own boundaries and experiment (Adam's chant session, R. Skye's
assorted weirdness and -- especially -- Carolyn's wonderful monologues are good
examples). Poetry and song seem to engender more of the same. Dan, have you
thought of inviting the dance department for a special No Shame night?
If it works, maybe it would work with some of the writing departments or others
that don't come to mind at 1 am.
On the nudity: from what I hear thru sources, there was some problem with a few
of the dancers' attitudes, a sort of "let's show these college girls what
they're missing" despite warnings not to expose themselves. I feel sorry for
the group that brought them here. It will be branded as "that group" for a long
time.
No Shame has always been in a defensible position. It's intents are
artistic/educational. But if you'll excuse the old reporter for being cynical,
even though No Shame can defend itself, having to defend itself would only do
harm. I didn't really think the complaint was about No Shame, but I was really
hoping that there wasn't someone who was offended by it or told their
born-again parents.
but enough of my paranoia. . .
