i humbly apologize for pretending to know what i was talking about in my
previous post in regards to the location of dead week.
my best of picks- ones that immediately come to mind are horak's getting laid
song, jamal's getting laid by 11 year olds song, erwins islam piece, and
something of dans- take your pick. oh and how could i forget sarahs
heartbreaking mime piece. that kicked the asses of many. a ben schmidt song
would definitely be in order and maybe that art piece he did. one that was
missed by many was a mark hansen piece performed on the week that the only
board members in attendance were kyle and sarah and i think kyle had to leave
before it was performed. i dont remember many specifics about it, only because
it was so incredibly incoherent, which is really the reason for its genius.
the most memorable line was "whether you enjoy the frankness of a blunt, or the
bluntness of a frank". anyway, if you guys dont put it in, then i guess ill
have to hold my own personal "best of" show this summer to put it in because it
rocked. mark, is your ass sore from my kissing it yet? also, a stangl piece
is very necessary, maybe the one he did last week. and last of all to cross my
mind this evening is aprilles gaydar piece. thatll hafta do for now, good
night all.

May I just say that at least on Best Of contender appeared in last night's
show. That bit about Mozart and Lenny Kravitz was a work of art. And the
forward-rewind bit performed by Cassady/Galbraith/Horak was a blast. And
maybe Chris' magazine/first date piece; I was in it, so it's hard to tell how
it looked from the audience, but I thought it was a lot of fun..

I agree that Mario sosa's god/mozart piece should definately be in best of. I
went through the old orders, and here are some of my other suggestions. I know
I've missed a lot of cool stuff though because I have a crappy memory, and it's
hard to connect some of the weirder titles to skits. Here's a few a do
remember, though:
From December, Jamal's Pooping in the dark grandpa poop definately stands out,
the skit where a guy accidentally wipes his butt with his grandpa's head or
something.
Matt Sacharski's Hey you. Yeah you. Do you have any marijuana to sell? was kind
of a classic, I think.
Black Market stuff should be invited to Best of, to do whatever they will.
Aprille's had some good pieces; the supermodel, telemarketed child slaves, the
"self-indulgent" piece, etc, dunno which I liked best.
Al Angel's Why I don't watch porn anymore was one of his more tightly written
pieces.
As with Mark Hansen's clever little radio piece with oedipus presley crying his
eyes out and other literary jokes.
Brad the juggler!! !~!!!!!!!!!!! !@
!
Chris Stangl--pick one... I liked Comedy is Funny, A five minute tragedy a lot,
but there have been other good ones.
Dan Brooks--the Dan piece that sticks most in memory is about his flight next
to an old lady and giving her a flower, which was just very lovely.
My stuff: While I cannot tell you how much I value feigned humility, over my
silence last semester the powers that be picked some of my more, er...
experimental... pieces. So my favorite of my own were the skit about how I lost
my virginity (the first one) by Alyssa Bowman and the elitist french, by me.
And I think Jamal's "Gay and Retarded" would make a nice closer for Best of and
the eclectic spring '99 season. Those are my thoughts. Do with them what you
will.

Someone inadvertantly straddled my name and quotation marks over the skit by
Alyssa Bowman from last week. Miss Bowman informed me of this herself but as
she has not yet procured speaking rights on this forum she has asked it to be
known that she's a little irked. Judging from her demeanor, though, I'd call it
more "zizzled with fury." Woe be onto the next Dan Brooks who doubts her
authorial integrity in the announcements. Hint. Hint hint.
Hint!!
Also: One of the pieces I forgot to mention for Best of was Aaron's Happily

So yeah, Friday night...I was running the lights, and was very unhappy about
things that had happened earlier in the night, so I was the Light Nazi. You
might have noticed the lights dimming after 5 minutes on some pieces. That was
my way of saying "you're piece is 9 mintes long and I could have done both my
pices that wrote in that time". Not that I'm bitter. So I can't really comment
on the show, as I was dozing for a lot of itNobody's fault, I was just tired
and not in a fun No Shame mood.
as for best of, I don't realsly know. I'll go trhough the orders again, but I

Actually, while a vote from the author of multiple pieces doesn't hold absolute
sway, it can be helpful to those making the selections for Best Of...

I noticed the five-minute dimming, and wondered if that's what it was. Thing
is, when you're in the glow of the lights, I'm not sure if it's as obvious as
it is from the audience perspective. If you really want to get performer
attention, maybe the booth op could turn a flashlight on and off a few times
when the performer is looking up. But tactics are a moot point unless the
board decides to implement a five-minute notification. In the past, people who
push it have simply been spoken to after the show. And generally there is some
leniency if the work in question was really good in addition to being a little
long.

I think the five-minute rule and the fifteen piece limit act as
counterbalances. I imagine there are pieces that overshoot the five minute
mark most weeks, but others that fall significantly short of it, so in a sense
"it all works out." The best gauge, though, is if the show gets out around or
before 12:30pm, which allows fifteen minutes for announcements (!) and an
average of five minutes for fifteen pieces.

Ah, yes. The quantification of art.

Apr 19, 1999 02:22 from Amaranth
It was the best week this semester. Mose's whole "Boreusall" piece was riot and
evrything satire should be. Makes me almost wish I'd seen _Marisol_. About
halfway through it, I was wondering if I really wanted to perform my piece.

Mike Cassidy's piece was too long and could have used editing. I think for the
limitations of No Shame, five minutes is good. granted art cannot be
quantified, but it is based in discipline. I found the lights dimming a good
idea -- I think the five-minute rule is being abused too much this semester for
pieces that would benefit from being shorter. And I will be holding an editing
workshop. . .

Just kidding.

Mike's piece was funny, tho. It was an excellent imitation of Mr. Stengl on
both his part and Dan's. With a bit of a trim, it would have been a Best OF
contender.

The radioactive preacher part was the only real dragging piece, and it looked
that much worse for being followed by the self-help piece. They were much too
similar, and one had to go down in flames. John Hague's museum piece also
dragged -- interesting ideas, but he said too little in too long a time.
Incidentally, he is the front runner in the cheese bread challenge. He not only
brought three new people, they were all women. Does he know he is in the
running?

And I think Stengl's piece should be considered for Best Of. He is fast
becoming heir apparent to Dan's title primary audience offender.

I think after four years of this, I finally created a typical Wolf piece: a
fascination with the sacred and profane, two people talking -- one of special
abilities, and a few incomprehensible ideas thrown in.

Even as I write this, the BONS pieces are being decided...or perhaps not.
Anyway, I went through the orders and came up with some stuff that I think
would repressent us well. And yes, represent was spelled wrong.
James Erwin: Parody #3 (the Islam rant), Greg M: Stratego, Jamal: the Gay and
Reatarded song, Dan: Kugelbrau monologue, Sarah: Lost and Found int the park
(the silent piece), Me (Mike Rothschild): Iron Fist of Zion, Al Angel: his MSM
song from 3/26, Brad Harris: Juggling (duh), Mark H. Radio Free Ferall, Chris:
After Bar, Jake Johnson "w", Gary's Rage (from dead week last semester),
Cassidy/Galbreath: My Urethra Aches (heckling w/ the huge Jewish Cock line),
Kyle: Super Human SOrority Girl, Aprille: Vendrella the SUper Model, A Ben
Schmidt song, Stangl: Comedy is Funny, Brad S. Listen and respond.
I know everyone is high on Mario Sosa's piece from last week, but I was reading
along (in the light booth) as he did the piece, and he was pretty good about
disregarding it...so who knows if he can do the same piece again.
But my absoulte favorite piece of the semster was from 2/19, number 10: "Title"
by Author. If it gets better than that, I don't want to know about it.

Okay, so I have the missing order, and will post it as soon as I remember to
bring it to work with me.

Also, be it known, that another "Best of" meeting has come and gone with
precious little bloodshed this semester. Very cool. Also, in going over the
pieces, I was struck by a couple of thoughts. One--there have been an AMAZING
amount of really quality pieces, with that vast majority of authors out-doing
themselves on a weekly basis. It was an extordinaryly difficult evening trying
to pare down a best of list, knowing that each piece we cut was likely
someone's favorite (our initial fantasy-everything-we-wanted order topped out
40 pieces). I hope people are pleased, and that everyone gets the Best of word
out--remember--sell out=naked dan. Two--there were a few curious threads of
commonalitiy running through the No Shame psyche this semester--no fewer that
five super-hero pieces. At least four sodomy-as-the-core-of-the -sketch
pieces. And, for whatever it's worth, an alarming decrease in poetry. I'm not
sure what this all means...

It means, says I, that:
Superheroes are a natural topic by virtue of the mutability that is the

James doing Tom Waits is funny...(and by doing I don't mean, you know, doing).
I thought my two part piece went very well considering we never rehearsed it.
Dan makes a groovy lightsaber noise. I had thought about shortening it and
turning it into one piece but I could never cut enough to do it. I also think
the second part was a little weaker than the first because it was rooted in the
same place and didn't have the frenetic energy the first one did. But it did
have buttsex, and lots of it!

Apr 25, 1999 22:35 from Fanky Maloon
I thought that was a pretty decent Dead Week, with a lot of excellent stuff.
But before I get into some specifics of what I liked, I must ask:
What's the problem with Kobe Bryant??? Seriously, I must know. I've been out
of the NBA loop for a few years and am just getting somewhat interested (unlike
all you Bulls drones, I'm happier without that team around so THERE). From
what I've seen, Kobe is, to put it quite distinguished, The Man. Why must he
eat it at the hand of God?? (for the record, Ewing must take hike ASAP,
agreed)

Now, you know it's going to be a great Dead Week show when Bradley Harris kicks
it off with some Jugglin' action. Rock.

Secondly, for a somewhat sparse-seeming Mabie theater crowd, I didn't feel that
any of the perforers had trouble with the space. See if I've ever said that
about Mabie before, kudos! Everyone was quite audible, it still felt good and
intimate in a Theater B kinda way, all the good stuff. I was saying that
evening that I feel that the No Shamer performers lately are almost universally
really strong performers, whereas the performers from say a couple of years ago
tended to be better writers, IMO. It's an interesting shift, anyone care to
discuss/berate/insult/villify?

Thirdly, James Erwin's Tom Waits impression song kicked so much booty that I
cannot handle it even this long after witnessing the spectacle. If you saw the
piece and haven't heard any Tom Waits, you have no idea what you're missing. I
think that Tom Waits himself would bust a gut if he were to witness it and
he'll probably want that song on his next album - he's just that kinda artsy
guy.

Fourthly (not just a King Missile song...) - Mike R - I dug the concept of the
Star Wars pair of pieces, but have to say I thought they dragged a bit. Of
course keep in mind that I'm really into short pieces, so my perspective would
tend to produce this reaction. But I guess to run with your post about your
debate, I probably would have preferred if it'd been cut into a single piece,
but hey. It was still pretty good.

And Fifthly (a word? now it is...) - does someone perhaps pretty please want t
(to) post the Best Of Order, perhaps with a VERY brief description of each that
got in? I heard the titles, but was only able to connect a piece with a few of
them.

Sixthly - the look on Okiishi's face when playing the Foreign Dignitary each
time he gave the audience the "look" was pure gold, and was another part of the
night that I am still not through grinning and cackling about. Not to mention
the script involving the classic section with Kyle assuming Chris called Mike a
homo completely regardless of Chris's statements. Oh, me oh my.

Seventhly, I'm rather tired and am going to go away now.

1-bouncing by brad -- the greatest juggler ever, as always. dude, you guys
don't even know the half of it. i've tossed shit around with this guy more
informally, and let's just say there's a lot of cool stuff he has yet to show
us.
2-phantom major--i didn't get this because i haven't seen star wars or star
trek or whatever movie he was riffing on, but i still agree that the script
could have used some cutting. some fun acting.
3-trample over me--i like kyle! i couldn't understand what he was saying, but i
like him anyway.
4-my roommate etc. - it was ok. there were some funny parts. you know what?
just about the only downfall ever of a no shame theatre piece is that it goes a
little too long, it could use some cutting, that kind of thing, cause pretty
much everybody has been doing good gags recently (which is quite an
achievement) but some stuff could just use some polishing.
5-i wrote this sketch myself -- good funny parts, but it kinda seemed like a
dead-week inspired meshing of a bunch of odd jokes by some pretty talented
writers into something a little half-assed.
6-james erwin as tom waits! ha! funny! funny impression! ha!
7-blackout sketch by mr. danger -- this was very funny, and very well-timed,
and everything we've come to expect from mr. danger
8-aprille's fantasies -- i thought some of the fantasies were rather hilarious
and some were like, standard targets, like rush limbaugh. Progress report:
Nobody "gave me head" after the show. thanks anyway, aprille.
HEY!! WHAT THE CRAP??!! i think the juggling skit by me and brad got left out
of the order. i think it was number 5.5.
9-a gentle farting in my ear by alyssa bowman -- when they read the order, dan
brooks was also credited with writing this one. but his coauthorship didn't
appear in the order. could someone clear this up for me? anyway, i felt jamal
did another nice delivery. and it felt good to kill off the captain.
10-something by chris, adam, tom -- man, even though this piece was really well
done, as always from these guys, it was yet another skit about some people
sitting around trying to think up something for no shame, even if it was
self-referencially yet another skit about some people trying to blah blah...
11-gorilla semen--did he actually expose his genitalia? i couldn't tell from
where i was sitting. either way, it was good except for the ending.
12-a carribean night--there! you see? poetry, new people, exactly what you guys
have been begging for. i'd like to note that havalah's premiere was actually
last week, in a certain sketch written by ... well, i should get the credit for
it anyway. i forget who wrote my sketch last week.
13-unicorn--i'm rather interested to see what people thought of this. i was
trying something different. honesty, please!
14-ben's song--this was really really awesome. it was extremely immediate. it
affected me and made me think. when big weird stuff happens and you keep
reading about it from newspapers and pseudo newspapers like the DI you're kind
of dying to hear someone say something intelligent about it. thanks, ben.
15-more phantom--yep.
16-damage to space and occupants--yet another brilliant hilarious skit about
how chris stangl hurts inside. even though it was a dead-week-esque
odds-and-ends, it was cool.

Apr 26, 1999 09:45 from Quicheo
A terrific night of No Shame, if you ask me. (although no one did)

Highlights for me--James' Tom Waits thing still had me in convulsions as I
tried to explain it to Rick later that night (Rick had never heard of Tom Waits
so he just looked at me pained and told me to go to sleep). Ben's song was
very moving, and apropo as hell. I like that he got so caught up in the words
he lost the melody he had intended--thus drawing more attention to the words.
Very unplanned cool. Dan's piece was brilliant, but like Meryl Streep and
Kevin Spacy, that really goes without saying. (Although, it was nice to have
him writting for other voices than his own, and the quasi-feminist comment at
the end was really cool. Made me jealous I couldn't be in the piece. But that
was true of most of the evening...)

I got a kick out of the Star Wars parody, and agree with its author that the
first part was stronger. Mose's "Unicorn" thing was perhaps my favorite thing
he did all year. A nice balance between conventional monologue, and absurdist
commentary, with a perfectly pitched ending. Bravo. Mose will be missed
...needless to say.

I must say, I really enjoyed being in Aprille
's piece--she is always so kind to write me good little bits, and I really
enjoy being a pawn of her delightfully ideosyncratic world. She definately
has her own voice, and in my opinion keeps getting better and better.

Kyle's song was beautiful as always. I got enough of the words to get the
message, but I wish I had been able to understand more. I'll have to work on
that. I really enjoyed doing our piece, especially since we were able to drag
our friend Tom on stage for the first time in Iowa. As Mose so aptly pointed
out, it was a little indulgent, and we feared it was so, but it was fun to do
anyway. Juggling was cool--especially the unexpected virtuosity from Mose!

I would have liked more Sarah Greer, but that is almost always true.

For me, the best piece of the really good evening was Chris Stangl's. Amazing
performance, terrific writting, totally knocked me on my ass. Wow. (Although,
if he would like to deal with his psychic pain in a more formal manner, I know
some really good counselors...) When he described his contract of mutual
contempt with the audience--I got chills. Very well controlled--well done,
Chris.

Lastly, Stubble and Whitebread went with me to the Mill afterward (where I
rudely abandoned them to chase after cheese bread...but that's another story,
and Aaron seemed involved in pursuits all his own...), and we all were
commenting on how much we would miss No Shame this summer (Mike even refered to
it as "four months of celebacy" later in the weekend--his mom was not so amused
by his analogy...). So true. This has been one heck of a semester--what with
our "Space Place" exile and all. But No Shame not only survived, but prospers.
All hail..

Oh, one more comment before ending this ever-so-long post--I wasn't around to
note the evolution that Greg mentioned in his post--but I definately agree that
No Shame is developing quite an array of solid performers who consistanly
elevate whatever material they are given. Perhaps some of the "old" writers
could submit some stuff for the "new" crop of performers? Trans-generational
No Shame...hmmmm....

Enough from me, I think...

Well, I don't have the Best of No Shame order, but I do have notes from when
Chris first read it off to me. Many of the titles meant nothing to me, so I
didn't always write them down. Perhaps some of you can reconstruct what I'm
talking about from the following:

1. Periodical Influences (magazine piece by Chris Okiishi)
2. Aaron Galbraith's piece about starting in the middle, going a little
forward, and rewinding all the way back to the beginning.
3. Bradley Harris doing Bradley Harris-type things.
4. Planet of the Aprilles, by Aprille Clarke
5. Dogs Are Stupid, by Megan Gogerty--except she can't make it
6. Gary's Rage (dead week last semester)
7. Title by Author (Aaron Galbraith's "I drive on..." piece)
8. Dan Brooks' Conditioning piece
9. SuperHuman Sorority Girl cut down to one 5-minute piece, by Kyle Lange
10. A James Horak piece I didn't see, so I didn't write down a title or
description (anyone?)
11. James Erwin's Islam piece
12. A Mike Rothschild piece I didn't see--title? description?
13. Commercial Attack, by Mark Hansen
14. Skull Fractures by Chris Stangl
15. Picasso, by Ben Schmidt
16. Mike Cassady's piece about talking to his Diary
17. Dan Brooks' short piece about being on a plane (where he pulled Kim Benesh
out of the audience and gave her a mime flower, only she didn't get it)
18. Mose's True Story about Losing his Virginity (the first one)
19. Sarah Greer's silent piece
20. Jamal's Gay and Retarded song.

Hope this helps...

Let's see if I can reconstruct from memory
2) Happily Ever After Upon a Time by Aaron Galbraith
3) Rings by Bradley Harris
6) Gary's Rage by Jake Johnson and Bill Bungeroth
8) Will the Last One Out of My Subconcious Please Turn Off the Lights by me.
10) The Vangelis Incident by JmaesHorak and Aaron Galbraith
11) Why We Fight by James Erwin
12) The Iron Fist of Zion by Iron Mike Rothschild
16) I don't remember the title of the diary piece, dammit.
17) What Do You Do With a Drunken Sailor? My Mom Married Him by me.
19) Sarah's Still Sick So This Will Be a Mime or something along those lines.
Dammit.
20) Ode to Lenny by Jamal credited to Mose
On a frightening note, if the number of random e-mails I have received from
people telling me they are bringing twenty friends is any indication, we might
actually sell out. Which means I might have to make good on my bet. Shudder.

Okay.. Two items...

1) I want a tape of Best of... get SVP to do this for me.. .I have like 49.95
burning a hole in my pocket for a video... and while I was going to use it to
buy the latest Private Adult Video Magazine... I will gladly use it to buy a
tape of the Best of No Shame...

to sum up.... I'm paying cash for a tape of Best of No Shame.

2) I have about 300.00 burning a hole in my pants to see Dan nekkid.

now, I will also be taking donations before the show to see Dan nekkid... If
everyone brings in $3.00 and we give one dollar to the fund, and two to the
actuall No SHame attendance.. we can easily see Dan Nekkid.

God, I live living cheap, and getting paid....

to sum up.... Dan will be nekkid at Best Of No Shame... Even if I have to write
the freaking check out myself.

( by the way, No cop outs, no screens to hide behind, no blackouts to hide the
evidence... no other people screening the audience... we wnat nude really
really nude... like I can see on the hidded camera in Dans hose that i have
been broadcasting over hte web..... )

.... In other news, people have decided that a bored Norm with Money is a very
very very very bad thing... I could give the money to charity... I could buy
cheese bread for everyojne for the whole next year..... but, no, I want to see
DAN...

the next three days..
( and then the insurance will pay for it anyway.)

I like the idea of a group picture. I think A lot of talent comes out of No
Shame, and it would be nice to have a record of it.

Incidentally, I think Stengl has the best title of the year las week (Damage
to space and occupants). The only weak link of the whole night was Aprille's
piece, but that is only because she has done much better. It would have been an
excellent first piece, but I had a feeling it was a clearing house for bits
that she didn't turn into anything or polish. Dead week seems to be a
clearinghouse for those pieces, and I have seen too many to be drawn in to
another. I am sure for those who are not used to them, it \had more impact.

And we had another piece from the guy who did the roommate sketch. He is quiet,
but hopefully you all will see more.

I;'ll be at BONS Friday (with a date? well, a female friend at any rate), but I
think with a new job, I will finally be breaking ties with No Shame and Iowa
City except for an odd trip or two. It was nice meeting everybody.

And let me re-iterate: pictures of performers are a good idea, especially for
the web page.

Okay, just to clear things up, if No Shame goes home with a full house or $1000
on Friday, I will be naked. I won't be obscured by any strategically placed
hats or curtains or Kyles, and frankly, my pride is a little injured that the
possibility of my reneging has been raised. I made the bet and I'm stickin' to
it. If and when it comes down, I will ask my mother to briefly leave the
theater (she picked this of all semesters to come and see No Shame) and that'll
be it. Me, the necklace my brother gave me that I'm always wearing, and contact
lenses. Nothing else.

Okay, so here's the "official" best of order:
(Dan and Adam did an amazing job, BTW)

1) Periodic Influences by Chris Okiishi (w/ Aprille, Mary Fons and Adam)
2) Happily Ever After Upon a Time by Aaron Galbraith (the backwards piece)
3) Ring by Bradley Harris (amazing juggling with rings)
4) Planet of the Aprilles by Aprille Clarke (Aprille's psyche played by four
    actors, including herself)
5) Dogs Are Stupid byt Megan Gogerty (I still have faith that she'll show up)
6) Gary's Rage by Jake Johnson (dead week from last semester)
6.5)Title By Author (really by Aaron Gailbraith, accompanied by James Horak)
7) Will the Last One Out of my Subconscious Please Turn Off the Lights by Dan
Brooks (Dan riffs of several issues, including "conditioning")
8) Super Human Sorority Girl "Saves" Iowa City by Kyle Lange (title says it
all, with titular performance by Mary Fons)
8.5)Objects in My Pants are Closer Than They Appear or The Vangelis Incident by
James Horak ("Chariots of Fire" like we've rarely seen before)
9) Parody #3 or Why We Fight by James and the Family Erwin (Gleeming parady of
WWII propaganda updated into current terms)
10) The Iron Fist of Zion by Michael Rothschild (tounge in cheek anti-semitism
    playing giddily with sterotypes)
10.5) Commercial Attack by Mark Hansen (commercial parody supreme)
11) Skull Fractures: A Fun Sketch about Love and Farts by Chris Stangl (Chris's
character explains what he likes in a partner)
12) Picasso by Ben Schmidt
12.5) Who Needs a Title with a Body Like This by Mike Cassady (Aaron writes in
his journal, read by Mike, with demonic overtones, appearance by Erwin)
13) What Do YOu Do With a Drunken Sailor? My Mom Married Him by Dan Brooks
(a chance meeting on a plane provides a charming romantic moment)
14) The True Story of How Mose Hayward Lost His Virginity by Alyssa Bowman
(but Mose says he really wrote it. Again, the title says enough)
15) Lost and Found in the Park or Sarah is Still Sick, So this Piece Will Have
No Speaking by Sarah Greer (Sarah gets dumped, finds love, all mime. Gold)
15.5) Ode to Lenny by Mose Hayward (but really by Jamal River--the most
over-the-top offensive song of the year. I can't get it out of my head.)

So, there you have it. Bring your friends.

BONS was a really strong show, although to be honest, I thought my sketch )Iron

I agree with Mikey that stuff is better the first time round. Almost all stuff.
That's why I did fart dance. What's great about No Shame is that it is, as
advertised, "cheap, raw, and unpredictable," all three of which are at least
slightly compromised at Best of. Nevertheless, a fun show. My mom was there.
Her review was pretty positive except she didn't get the jokes. And she wanted
to know why Jamal was singing "you're so gay and retarded," and why people
weren't offended. She also said jamal's "Fart, Fart, Fart ..." song "lacked
substance." So there, Jamal. I'm curious: I know other moms were there, how did
they like the show? Dan?

Yeah, I know him Aprille. That was Rob, aka Norm, and Dan basically sealed
his fate by making such a public proclamation. Rob lives for the absurd,
bizarre, and humiliating. This is a man who once broke into my apartment for
the sole purpose of hiding all of our remote controls (which is quite a few,
tv, vcr, stereo, dmx, cable) in various places around the place. Some we
didn't find for months (the one in the freezer was particularly insidious).

As my roommate Tim once said, if you see Rob having fun, stop him. For god's

I thought Best of Dragged a bit too, even though I'd seen NONE of the pieces,
but this was partially because I'd been up since around 5:15 am and I started
nodding off toward the end. The lengthy Picasso piece, which was serious,
quiet, long, andrequired thought, really shouldn't have been so near the end of
the evening. And the Islam-is-evil and Zion-is-evil pieces definitely shouldn't
have been back-to-back, and probably not both in Best Of, for best effect.

But overall, it was a GREAT show, one of the stronger Best Ofs I've ever seen.
Superhuman Sorority Girl was a special favorite. So was "Gay and Retarded,"

I'm STILL singing Gay and Retarded. And the Fart Song makes cameo appearances
in my subconscious. Them songs are built to last... Seriously, though, I
thought Jamal's vocal projection and crowd-working on that last song (by which
time I believe the show definitely needed a boost) were very strong, and it was
a great way to wrap up the night.

Carolyn> It manifested itself for the duration of the announcements. I was
wearing contact lenses, but that was about it. Every fibre in my being wants me
to include a witty remark here, but I just finished my final playwriting
project, and I couldn't construct a joke to save me life.
Eighty pages. Started with 23 yesterday at 5:00pm. I am a god among men. Also a
moron for procrastinating so much.

I really really really enjoyed both Dead Week and Best Of. And I'm not just
saying this because I've been slack about getting to my review and want to
dessert-topping-floor-wax y'all. It's true.

I feel almost sad that I missed this semester. No, scratch that "almost". For
the first time since the early nineties I feel like the No Shame crew has
really jelled together as sort of a troupe. The regulars are good as well as
regular. People who used to be so bad I cringed every time they came on stage
come on and do quality shit... seriously good stuff. No Shame Theater's next
generation has evolved, improved, and become a force all their own, and I'm
pretty proud of the lot of you. I'm sure about three of you actually care, but
there's my class-H stamp, for what it's worth.

The thing that makes me particularly sad is that Mose Heyward is leaving never
to be seen again, and this bothers me because I pretty much missed everything
he did. I saw a few of his early sketches and now bam, he's leaving, and that
sucks. Piss on it.

Hey--for those who don't know, it's Plawright's Festival at the University this
week. Tonight No Shamers Michael Rothschild and Aaron Galbraith will be
appearing in the 5:30 and 9pm performances of Doppel-Gang-Bang. And although I
don't have the schedule in front of me, I know several No Shame regulars will
be in the lineup of short undergraduate works beginning at 5:30pm tomorrow
for free. (The plays are $5 for students, $7 for everyone else, but Thursday's
staged readings are exempt.) And there are also plays on Friday and Saturday
at 5:30 and 9pm (Fri: Each Loop Like You Mean It, and Saturday: Sunday
Morning, Two Men Cooking Breakfast).

Does anyone have the inside scoop on Playwright's Festival shows? I've heard
Saturday's play will kick butt, but haven't heard much about the rest..

Saturdays' play is in fact suppsed to kick butt. I also heard that tongiht's
show is pretty funny or wacky or soemthing ( doppel gang bang).
and as always the undergrad cameos will rock.

SO nice to hear from Alethe (BTW--her Honors Project "The Way of Things" was
amazing! The natural progression and amalgamation of her serious and comedic
No Shame pieces, well-constructed, honest, and occasionally scary in it's
observations of the inner workings of modern neurotics. Really
cool--especially this section where a couple reherse their
"I'm leaving you" speeches--he in his car, she in the mirror. Solid.)

As for T-shirts--I have plenty to sell--Mail> me your phone number, and we'll
work out a deal.

Great Best of everyone...

An interesting thought that No Shame has grown into a troupe. Although I never
felt as much a part of it as I had in years past, I do think this group was
above factionalism and devoid of the cliques that affected No Shame back in
those days when it was cancelled some nights for lack of scripts.

Well, every year is different.

"those days when it was cancelled some nights for lack of scripts" was actually
several different dry spells over five or six years, usually about every third
semester or so. Some of those periods were much more cliquey than others.

I only know of the one stretch. But it seems to me from that experience and
similar experience with other groups that cliques kill anything. Cliques often
write for others in the clique rather than an audience (being stage or writing
or art), and excessive in-jokes and group references are the best way to boire
an audience.
It was nice to see the concern about lack of women and new members this
semester and the number of people who were invited to show at the Mill or the
Village Idiot after the performance. There was a feeling (to me) that this
round was more about No Shame than the people involved.

Whoops -- that should be "bore an audience."

In my experience, over the last 4 1/2 years, its much as Whitewolf described
it. Periods of abundance adn periods of scarcity, with how cliquey NS being
being a different measure, really.
