Tired

by Rob Merritt

I was looking on the website and noticed that you'd put some new photos up in the photo gallery. You had a photo of me performing, and then another photo of me being force-fed a bottle of Surge Soda by Kent Lambert, in the Iowa City Press Citizen clipping from Friday, February 14, 1997.

Both of the photos are from my piece, "Tired." Basically, it was a big rant about how much Valentine's Day sucks ass for the single-guy working stiff, which concluded with the line "I'm tired of it all." At which point Kent Lambert, who we oh-so-brilliantly planted amongst the crowd dressed as a stoner, arose with a bottle of Surge Soda, saying, "Did you say you're tired, man?" He then came down onstage and attacked me with the Surge bottle, held me down and force-fed the entire thing into my mouth while screaming incessantly about "20 ounces of pure citrus refreshment." We then stumbled offstage to the cheers and delights of a crowd that had never seen such ground-breaking innovation in the history of American theatre. Maybe it didn't quite actually go like that but I like to remember it that way, anyway.
