Street Folk

by Brian Anderson

Lights Up:

A bare stage with only a boom box (radio), and the ambient sounds of the streets.

HOMELESSLONER enters, with no apparent direction.

He discovers the boom box (radio).

Examines it.

Pushes a button.

CUBAN MUSIC blasts the stage, frightening HOMELESSLONER.

The music continues thru the whole piece.

He takes the music in.

He begins to enjoy it.

Uncontrollably, he begins to dance.

He picks up the boom box (radio), continuing his dance.

Soon after, ASSDRUNKMAN (a more tattered homeless man & drunk off his ass ), stumbles on stage, unaware of the dancing HOMELESSLONER.

HOMELESSLONER sees ASSDRUNKMAN and looks for his attention by trying to get ASSDRUNKMAN to dance, by dancing near him.

ASSDRUNKMAN, slightly disgusted and weirded out by a dancing homeless man , runs away to the opposite side of the stage to drink his sorrows away alone.

ASSDRUNKMAN, takes the music in and begins to dance as well.

Both of the 2 are dancing now.

CRAZYTALK enters the stage rambling some fowl language about something, very angrily, to no one in particular.

As soon as CRAZYTALK registers the beat of the music, dancing takes over.

Now, all 3 are dancing.

2 other homeless begin dancing immediately on stage w/ trash bags or some other homeless attire.  Are they possibly a DANCING COUPLE?  Maybe some ballroom or salsa dancing?

Now, all 5 are dancing, having the time of their lives!

Soon, more and more STREETFOLK come onstage dancing in their own personal, unique way. This is the best entertainment they have had in ages!  What a perfect night for all of them!

Soon, a police siren is heard getting nearer and nearer. The STREETFOLK pick up on the sound of the siren. The police are nearing! They stop dancing and scatter off stage, leaving all but HOMELESSLONER with the boom box (radio).

He is frightened. Not knowing what to do, he sets the boom box (radio) down where he found it, and rushes off the stage.

All that remains is the boom box (radio), just as it was at the beginning.

The CUBAN MUSIC ends, leaving only the sounds of the sirens.

Lights fade out.
