"Trial By Fire"
Lyrics by Cory Capron and Music by Liam Gilchrist. Performed Friday, July 11, 2003

In the wilderness of love and anarchy
I found you robbing a missionary
Of all his robes and violent machinery
And I stared at you afraid to smile
And you stared back for a little while
Then you declared that it was you who had found me

On Prometheus's stone I pledged my love
Drawing the sword, licking the blood
But remorse was written in the fiendish stars above
In the misty valley we secretly wed
And with youthful dreams we were well fed
Till impatient fate took off her velvet glove

(Chorus)
In your cloud lagoon it first occurred
I fell into your pale orchard
Of angelic limbs and subtle fruit
With the strings cut from my parachute...
I came of age an honest liar
And found my heart, through trial by fire

Our pillows like teabags soaked with tears
Brewing discontent and ticking fears
While we bowed our heads as the dining room cleared
As the hands displayed the hour late
I realized the time had come I hate
And we set about to butchering each other's ears

With time we broke into a truce
And lived in mutual misuse
Sleeping on so much unspoken abuse
And when you slept walked to the balcony
I saw a chance at last to be set free
But my heart just wouldn't let me cut you loose

(Chorus)
In your cloud lagoon it first occurred
I fell into your pale orchard
Of angelic limbs and subtle fruit
With the strings cut from my parachute...
I came of age an honest liar
And found my heart, through trial by fire

(Solo)

On the rigor mortis arms of your savage prince
Hang these robes of your mock repentance
Stripped away to pay the bridge troll his expense
And now vultures sit upon my arms
And the wilderness fades into farms
I'm still petrified by your naked presence

I came of age an honest liar
And found my heart, through trial by fire
Oh...
I came of age an honest liar
And found my heart, through trial by fire
Oh...
Through trial by fire

AUTHOR'S NOTES (Capron):
Liam managed to keep this one incredibly close to my original vision of it. We worked it out on my birthday. I wrote it while stuck in my room with a sprained ankle from a trip to West Virginia. I was in a little bit of pain and fairly annoyed that I was bedridden and missing Danny Schmidt's last performance. I was listening to the album "Songs of Leonard Cohen" and it all just lead to me writing this pretty bitter love song. At the same time I wrote (or really finished) another song called "The Briar Fields" which looks at similar themes. Oddly enough, both these songs about bitter love came at a time where I had nothing so dark going on in my life that really related to them. Perhaps I just need to listen to less Elvis Costello and Leonard Cohen.
