episode Five (5)

The one-armed man, with the bread, is humming and chanting, he is in a sort of trance, trying to make a telepathic link with someone. He calls out:

ONE-ARMED MAN
Otisss…

Otis comes in, but moving as if he is not really in control of his body, as if he was a summoned spirit.

OTIS
Jake?

ONE-ARMED MAN
Jake is dead.

OTIS (seeing the one-armed man for the first time)
How did you summon me? Send me back.

ONE-ARMED MAN
Where are you?

OTIS
I’m on my way to Mount Vernon, racing down destiny’s dusty road in an old grey pickup truck driven by a most succulent dark-haired blood-feast. Send me back now before he suspects that I’m astral projecting.

ONE-ARMED MAN
I have the bread.

OTIS
That’s impossible.

ONE-ARMED MAN
I found it on a roadside. Meet me in Oelwein.

OTIS
No. That place stinks of death.

ONE-ARMED MAN
Everywhere you stand stinks of death.

OTIS
It stinks of my death. And yours.

ONE-ARMED MAN
I command you, by the power of the Bread, meet me in Oelwein.

OTIS
The high priest is dead. You have no power.

ONE-ARMED MAN
(brandishing the bread) I am the high priest. I have the bread.

OTIS (seeing the bread for the first time)

That’s the bread?!? No! No!! I almost sat on that bread! The bread was within my reach and I let him throw it out the window!

ONE-ARMED MAN
Help me find the three hundred eleven dollars and the thirty-seven cents or I will kill you.

OTIS
I am getting as far away fro Oelwein as I can get before the evil fate I feel looming over Time’s horizon, comes crashing down on this state of Iowa like a mystic juggernaut.

One-armed man stabs Otis with the bread. Otis dies.

AUTHOR'S NOTES:
This episode was actually written by Jeff Goode
Brass Link was a No Shame serial created by Sean Clark and Jeff Goode. The two writers alternated episodes with no pre-planning of the direction of the series. Each new episode required the current writer to pick up wherever the other had left off. Recurring roles were usually played by the same actors from week-to-week, though the part of Roger, notably, was played by three different actors.
