Episode seven!!!

Zack, the one-armed man is again communing with the spirits. The Bread is at centerstage.

ZACK. (calling to the spirit world) Roy. Axel. Vera.

Roy, a one-armed man, enters.

Roy is an astral projection of himself.

ROY. Who has summoned me?

ZACK. I am the high priest.

ROY. The high priest is dead.

ZACK. I am the new high priest.

Axel, a one-armed man, enter.

Axel is an astral projection of himself.

AXEL. Hello, Zack.

ZACK. Hello, Axel.

ROY. Zack? You were Jake’s apprentice.

ZACK. Jake is dead. I am no longer an apprentice. I am the high priest.

ROY. How?

ZACK. I have the bread.

ROY. You?! You admit to being the heretic who stole the bread?

ZACK. No. The bread was lost when the high priest was killed, but I have found it again.

AXEL. You are the master of the Bread.

ZACK. Yes, and more. I now have the three hundred eleven dollars and the thirty-seven cents.

AXEL. The talisman is almost complete.

ZACK. Vera!

Vera enters carrying an axe.

She is an astral projection of herself.

Like Zack, Roy and Axel, she is missing her right arm.

VERA. Why did you disturb me? I am performing a blood feast.

AXEL. It is the high priest.

VERA. The high priest!

ZACK. Meet me in Oelwein.

ROY, AXEL & VERA. (whining:) Oelwein?

ZACK. What does everybody have against Oelwein, lately?

ROY. (with contempt) Novice.

DEPUTY. (from offstage) He ran in here!

Javert and Deputy run in.

DEPUTY. Oops, I guess he didn’t come in here.

JAVERT. Sorry.

Javert and Deputy run out.

ZACK. Get them!

Roy, Axel and Vera exit after Javert.

Otis enters from the opposite side.

Otis is not an astral projection, but he does wield a knife. He has two arms.

ZACK. You have two arms! You aren’t allowed to have two arms.

OTIS. (Otis no longer speaks with a drawl, but he is very angry, obsessed.) I’VE ALWAYS HAD TWO ARMS.

ZACK. How did you find me, Otis?

OTIS. I CAN SMELL THE BREAD. GIVE IT TO ME.

Zack stabs Otis wih the bread. It has no effect on Otis.

ZACK. This is impossible.

OTIS. I AM NOT A MAN. I AM A MISSION. YOU CAN’T KILL ME. GIVE BACK MY BREAD.

Zack gives Otis the bread.

OTIS. (still without a drawl, but suddenly much more mellow:) Thanks.

Otis seems relieved. He relaxes, smiles. Then he feels his pockets.

OTIS. Oh, no! My life savings of three hundred and eleven dollars and thirty-seven cents, it’s gone!

Suddenly, something clicks, Otis turns to Zack, evil again:

OTIS. YOU HAVE IT. GIVE IT BACK TO ME.

Zack gives Otis a wallet.

OTIS. Gosh, thanks, I was worried about this.

ZACK. Otis.

Otis starts to leave.

ZACK. Otis!

OTIS. Oh, are you talking to me?

ZACK. Yes.

OTIS. I’m sorry, you must have the wrong guy. I’m not Otis. My name is Mike O’Malley.

Zack stares at him.

Just then, Roy, Axel and Vera return with Javert and the Deputy.

DEPUTY. (pointing at Otis) Look, Detective Javert, he did come in here after all.

Otis exits.

ZACK. (to the one-armed spirits) Take care of them.

AUTHOR'S NOTES:
This episode was actually written by Jeff Goode
Brass Link was a No Shame serial created by Sean Clark and Jeff Goode. The two writers alternated episodes with no pre-planning of the direction of the series. Each new episode required the current writer to pick up wherever the other had left off. Recurring roles were usually played by the same actors from week-to-week, though the part of Roger, notably, was played by three different actors.
