Sixty Lines by J Lin Erwin

John: (hollow) What’s the point?

Paul: (mildly interested) Of what?

John: (mulling) In a larger sense, yes.

Paul: (mildly confused) Yes?

John: (polite) Isn’t it?

Paul: (confused) Are you asking me?

John: (confused) Should I not?

Paul: (confused) What are you asking?

John: (firm) What’s the point?

Paul: (explaining) I’d like to know.

John: (wistful) So would I.

(beat)

Paul: (frustrated) We’re getting nowhere.

John: (me too!) That’s why I’m asking.

Paul: (confused) What are you asking?

John: (repeating) What’s the point?

Paul: (exasperated) Is it worth asking?

John: (musing) A valid question.

Paul: (gathering patience) Then repeat it.

John: (confused) Repeat what?

Paul: (furious) Imbecile!

John: (confused) Imbecile?

Paul: (furious) No!

John: (confused) Then why did you say it?

Paul: (barely controlled) Repeat- your- question!

John: (repeating) What’s the point?

Paul: (explaining) I’ve forgotten it.

John: (wondering) You’ve forgotten it?

Paul: (as a matter of fact) I have.

John: (excited) You had it once?

Paul: (confused) I think so.

John: (leaping) This changes everything!

Paul: (confused) Changes what?

John: (bliss!) I never hoped you had the answer!

Paul: (confused) To what?

John: (happy!) What’s the point?

Paul: (hate) I hate you.

(beat)

John: (confused) Do you?

Paul: (dammit, yes) I do.

John: (confused) Why?

Paul: (exasperated) You won’t answer me.

John: (last glimmer of hope) Will you answer me?

Paul: (confused) Answer you what?

John: (anger) What’s the point?

Paul: (relenting) Alright, I don’t hate you. Ask me.

John: (earnest) What’s the point?

Paul: (hate) I hate you.

John: (confused) But why?

Paul: (anger) I just do!

John: (wistful) I wish we were friends.

Paul: (hollow) What’s the point?

John: (confused) Of what?

Paul: (musing) In a larger sense, yes.

John: (confused) Yes?

Paul: (anger) Isn’t it?

John: (confused) Are you asking me?

Paul: (exhausted) Should I not?

John: (anger) What are you asking?

Paul: (exhausted) What’s the point?

John: (sagging) I’d like to know.

Paul: (hollow) So would I.
