HE WISHES FOR THE CLOTHS OF HEAVEN

By John James Hickey (c) 4/11/03

In blackness we hear the Intermezzo from Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana. Lights slowly fade up to reveal David dancing in place like Jake LaMotta (Robert DeNiro) at the start of Raging Bull. On occasion he stops and throws a series of uppercuts before continuing his dancing in place. He continues to dance until...

MANAGER

Hey!!!

David and Music stop. Lights snap to full.

MANAGER

What the hell are you doing?!

DAVID

(beat) Just dreaming.

MANAGER

Well, I don’t pay you to dream. I pay you to fucking sweep. Now sweep.

Manager throws the broom at David. They stare at each other. David without taking his eyes off the Manager David begins sweeping in silence.

Manager watches him and then exits.

As he sweeps, the Music slowly creeps in. David continues to sweep but slows down and then stops.

He stares at the dirt pile on the floor and then he resigns himself to sweep again.

Lights fade leaving David sweeping in a pool of light.

Lights fade to black.
