You tell the policeman you're sorry, but a loyal friend just can't go around neglecting her true friend for every police officer who comes along. You leave the store, on your way to the hospital to see Muffi.
When you get there, you find Muffi's parents in the waiting room, filling out paperwork. When an appropriate time comes, you ask them what room Muffi's in. They look at you strangely.
"Um, are you a friend of Muffi's?" her mother asks you.
"Well duh, we've only been best friends since fourth grade," you reply, somewhat insulted that they didn't recognize you, but at the same time flattered that you have made such a transformation with this new look.
"Oh, I didn't recognize you...dear," her mother says, squinting, and tells you Muffi's room number.
When you get up to Muffi's room, the first thing you notice is a bombardment of floral odor. You don't know how Muffi managed to get so many flowers so fast, since she's only been in the hospital fifteen minutes, but she was always a popular girl. It's those eyelashes. Then you see Muffi's boyfriend Buck kneeling next to the bed, sobbing. Muffi is lying in the bed, obviously bloated, and still half shoved into the dress.
"Ahem," you say.
Muffi looks up at you. "Omigod," she says. "This is completely the suckiest day of my life. I've never been so bloated. And what's with the hair and makeup?" Buck is still crying hysterically. "Chill, Buck," she says, and whaps him across the nose. "I'm going to be just fine."
"But I don't want a blood clot for a girlfriend!" Buck manages to get out between sobs. Then he looks up for a moment, seeing you. "Whoa," he says. He then gets up and regains his composure. "Hey, bebbeh," he says to you.
You look at Buck a little strangely. "Um, I just wanted to make sure you were doing ok," you say to Muffi. "I guess you've got enough company here. I think I'll go home now."
"Ok, thanks for stopping by," Muffi says. "I'll call you when I get out of this thing so we can go shopping again."
You leave the room, and when you reach the corridor, you're surprised to see Buck come up next to you.
"You're such a babe," he says sincerely. "Will you go to the Big Dance with me?" You're flattered; after all, Buck is the most desirable boy in school. But he's also your best friend's boyfriend.
